Here's some software utilities that may help solve problems with some Sierra games that just don't seem to be working right, or might be useful in causing a game to work with a special configuration you're using. You'll also find some other non-Sierra MIDI utilities that may be useful to you on this page. Quest Studios does not endorse nor support any of these utilities but is simply making them available for your use. For specific support, you may wish to contact the author of the software.
If you have any Sierra or other MIDI related utilities that you'd like to share with others, please don't hesitate to do so! Write me at tom@queststudios.com.

   SIERRA, MIDI, DIGITAL UTILITIES
MEDIA PLAYER OGG CODEC
For all Windows DirectShow Applications
A Windows Media Player (or any other DirectShow application) codec for Ogg Vorbis digital file playback. Supports Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Speex, Ogg Theora, Ogg FLAC and native FLAC.
CM-500 LA/GS SYNTH SYSEX This ZIP contains a SysEx MIDI file which will turn parts (channels) 2-10 off on Roland CM-300 and CM-500 modules, as well as many other Roland GS devices. This is especially useful for those who route MIDI output through a Sound Canvas to a LA synth and need to silence the GS channels. The "Partsoff.mid" file will also correct LA synth playback problems with some older Sierra games when played on the CM-500, in 'Mode A'. Simply play the "Partsoff.mid" file prior to using the LA synth for other purposes. A "Partson.mid" SysEx MIDI file is also included.
GENERAL MIDI UTILITY
Sierra On-Line's after-market support for General MIDI, EMU Proteus/1, Roland D110, and Roland D10, D20 series synthesizers. This GENMIDI.DRV driver and the appropriate patch file (.PAT) will work with Leisure Suit Larry 1 and 5, Holye 3, Space Quest 1 (VGA) and 4, Eco Quest 1, Robin Hood, and Mixed-Up Fairy Tales. A little experimenting may yeild more games that will work with the driver as well. Complete instructions are included.
AWE32 SUPPORT DRIVER Creative Labs & Sierra On-Line have gotten together to provide after market support for the AWE32 and some of Sierra's titles. Three drivers were written to support the AWE32 in its' native mode rather than through General MIDI emulation. Games supported include: EcoQuest 1 (CD-ROM version only), EcoQuest 2, Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist (Diskette & CD-ROM), Hoyle Classic Card Games, Island of Dr. Brain, King's Quest 6 (Diskette & CD-ROM. CD-ROM requires the large installation), Laura Bow 2 (Diskette & CD-ROM. CD-ROM requires the full installation) Leisure Suit Larry 6 (Diskette version only), Quest for Glory 1 (VGA Version), Quest for Glory 3, Slater & Charlie Go Camping, Space Quest 4 (CD-ROM version only), and Space Quest 5. Complete instructions are included.
SOUND BLASTER MIDI PORT UTILITY This utility program by Anders Olsson will modify most Sierra games to run on an MT-32 using a SoundBlaster (or compatible) card as the MIDI interface (instead of the standard MPU-401.) It will work with almost all Sierra games created from 1988 to approximately 1994.
SIERRA MIDI PORT CHANGER If you have a sound card using a MIDI port address other than 330H (i.e. 300H), you can use this program to change the address in most Sierra DOS-based games released from 1990-1995 (King's Quest IV and later.) Benjamin Carter's MIDI Port Changer changes to any port number and has the familiar Sierra-style interface.
SIERRA AGI MIDI UTILITY Another utility program from Anders Olsson which enables MIDI support for Sierra's AGI adventures. Works like a charm, but be sure to read the included documentation for proper use and limitations.
SIERRA MT-32 DRIVER This driver corrects problems with some high-resolution Sierra games that support both MT-32 and DAC playback.
DAGGER OF AMON RA SHEET MUSIC "THE DEATH OF DR. CARRINGTON" by Chris Brayman, from Laura Bow 2: The Dagger Of Amon Ra. Arranged for piano by Joonas Linkola. Greyscale 300 dpi full-size image.
SIERRA GENERIC MT DRIVER This is a "generic" Sierra sound driver by Stuart Goldstein (Sierra On-Line) that will drive any multi-timbral MIDI sound module. Requires a MPU-401 compatible MIDI Interface. Documentation is included.
GO SIERRA v3 GoSierra v3 is small sound driver patch that helps restore digital output on faster (Pentium and above) PC's. Install to the game directory and follow the on-screen Instructions. Copyright ©2000,2002 Kiewitz.
MT-32 RESET A simple System Exclusive file submitted by Rolf Hopkins which resets the MT-32 to its' default timbres. A useful function for LAPC-1 owners who would otherwise have to reset their computer to accomplish this.
SIERRA MT-32 PATCH BANKS An extensive collection of Roland MT-32 Sound Module System Exclusive patch banks from dozens of Sierra On-Line games. These are great for mixing and editing into your own custom patch banks, or transmitting from outside the game.
SIERRA MT-32 SOUND LIBRARY A collection of dozens of Sierra patches, all easily accessible from a simple to use graphical DOS menu. The SIERRA SOUND LIBRARY, by Marc Vandenhende of Belgium, allows you to preview MT-32 custom sounds used in many of Sierra's adventure games. This can be very useful when looking for a particular patch to use in making your own custom patch banks. The program also allows export of the sounds to a couple of patch bank formats.
MIDI-OX v7.0 MIDI-OX 7.0 is a Windows XP (also Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000*) program. MIDI-OX is a multi-purpose tool: it is both a diagnostic tool and a System Exclusive utility. It can perform filtering of MIDI data streams. It displays incoming MIDI streams, and passes the data to a MIDI output driver or the MIDI Mapper. It can convert any type of MIDI message into almost any other type of MIDI message. You can generate MIDI data using the computer keyboard or the built-in control panel. You can even record and log MIDI data and then convert it to a Standard MIDI File for playback by a sequencer.

* Note to Linux users:  Using the "cat file.syx >/dev/midi00" command sends the contents of "file.syx" to your MIDI port. (Substitute 'midi00' with the correct designation of your MIDI port.
SEND SYSEX v1.22 The purpose of this utility is to test and try SysEx (or any other MIDI message ) with your synths or other MIDI devices. You can also use it as a means to change some settings of your synth or MIDI device. Furthermore it may serve as a MIDI monitor or as a handler for MIDI bulk dumps. This utility is currently being updated; check author's website for latest version and information about purchasing.  http://www.bome.com/midi/sendsx/
SC-D70 SOUND MAP UTILITY An easy-to-use Java utility program by Bevil that sends SysEx messages to perform the sound map change on the Roland SC-D70. Simply select the MIDI output device, the respective sound map, and click on the change button.

This program requires the java runtime environment which can be downloaded here.
