Roland CM-32L
Yamaha MU10
Audigy 2 ZS
Ensoniq Soundscape Elite
Gravis Ultrasound MAX

In storage:
Ton of Creative SoundBlasters
Creative AWE32

Sound Galaxy Basic 16 (an SB clone notable for two things:  routing PC speaker sound through the card using only the bus, and emulating the Disney Sound Source)

You'll find that the Pro AudioSpectrum cards also have this feature (in pre-486 PCs).

Does the Pro Audio Spectrum+ come with an OPL3 chip as opposed to the dual OPL2 chips of the Pro Audio Spectrum?  I believe the + was able to boast 16-bit playback over the original, but I wonder if this change was made as well.

The Pro AudioSpectrum Plus is essentially a reduced PAS16, limited with 8-bit PCM sampling and playback.

Every legitimate reference I've seen states that it has OPL-3 synthesis, unless you want to believe an unconfirmed claim that the earliest versions of both cards shipped with dual OPL-2 chips...

SB16 Basic
SB Live!
Roland MT-32
Roland SCD-15
Roland MPU-401/AT
Aureal A3D Vortex2 (the SCB-55 daughterboard is mounted to this currently)
Advanced Gravis MIDI breakout box

Let me see....

I started with a Sound Blaster Pro (if you don't count Atari/Tandy systems) on my 486.

For PC specifically:
Diamond Monster Sound
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (awesome soundcard, very clean output)
Yamaha DB50XG (amazing sound, the best IMHO, though many games were optimized for the Roland)
Roland Sound Canvas daughtercard (I think SCD-15)

Other:
Kawai K5000W advanced additive workstation
EMU UltraProteus
EMU Proteus2
AVM Summit (Kurzweil 12mb K2vx with orchestral bank, designed for games but used for scoring student projects)

I have an SB32 with a bunch of memory installed for sound fonts, but it hasn't been installed in a system in ages and was always very noisy and disappointing. I never did any gaming with it.

OK:

Right now I have:
-MT32 rev.0
-SB32  CT3620

I have this underway:
The NEC PC-98 version of the Yamaha DB60XG.
AWE64 gold. ( I needs me some spdif goings on up in here!  Cool )

To be added eventually:
SC-55 or the like.

I've just started out, but like all of my hobbies, when it's new I go on a spending spree,
and after I'm done playing with them, they end up in the attic for years and years.  Roll Eyes

In my possession now:

Yamaha DB50XG
Roland MT-32
Roland SC-155
AWE64 Gold
SB32

So basically all I'm looking for right now is a FB-01, for cheap, and I do stress cheap because what can you really do with it....

I think I need to change my vote too  Tongue

Here's all the "main" stuff I have:

Roland MT-32 (PCB 00)
Roland CM-32L
Roland CM-64
Roland CM-300
Two Roland D-110s
Yamaha MU10

SoundBlaster AWE64
SoundBlaster AWE32 IDE
Two SoundBlaster 16s (old and new revision)
SoundBlaster Pro 2
Gravis Ultrasound MAX w/ RAM extension

Another (yes) Roland D-110, for spares & attempt to get ROM before 1.07 (for older PCM tone ROM)

Well, my setup currently includes (and will most likely stay that way for a while):
Latop:
Behringer UCA-202 external USB sound card
CM-64 (which I'm extremely happy with)

Main Computer:
Dream 64 wavetable daughterboard (essentially, an SC-55 clone with 64 note polyphony and without the MT-32 bank) attached to a Terratec SixPack
Roland MT-32 rev0 (I think, never bothered to check)

Old Games and Music Computer:
Yamaha WF192XG (for digital audio)
Roland LAPC-I
Roland SCB-55 connected to a Roland MPU-401AT interface card
Yamaha SW60XG

Other cards
Adlib Gold (no reverb module)
SB 2.0
SBPro 1.0
SB Vibra16 PNP

Why are you looking to get an SC-88 or the pro?  Interested in composing?

In that case, get an SC-88.  They're really cool, and you can spend lots of time messing with it.

You can apply the "Extended Edition" firmware update to your MU1000. In addition to added effects and features, it supposedly enables "true" GS-compatibility, though I'm not sure how complete the SysEx implementation is.

http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/syndtm/dl/cmp/mu1000/index.html

I upgraded an MU2000 that I owned for an entire week, and didn't have any trouble doing so. I wish I'd tested the GS compatibility more thoroughly, so as to give you a better idea of what (if anything) the enhancement provided over the TG300 mode. Also, unlike the MU2000, I think if you upgrade an MU1000 to an MU1000EX, you lose the built-in demonstration songs.

How much for the MU128? Wink

Hiya!

Thanks for the info but I've already done the upgrade to the MU1000 and the v2 upgrade to the MU128s (GM2). As you say, not at all difficult to do, the only thing you need is some patience! The MU1000 appears to be pretty compatible with the GS mode and switches straight into it on receipt of the GS System On message. One of the other benefits is that it allows a certain degree of flexibility in the routing of audio signals through to the S/PDIF out socket. I'm still trying to sort out the MIDI commands needed to do this as the manual is only available in Japanese. You're quite right, there doesn't seem to be any demo. I guess the memory used for all the extra effects has eaten the demos!

Hmmm, a price for the MU128 I'm thinking of selling? Good question. I'll need to check out the going price for one but I imagine it's going to be in the region of 250 quid plus postage. This one is in absolutely pristine condition and looks as though it's hardly been used. I bought it as a backup for the original one and, apart from testing it and doing the upgrade, I haven't used it. It's been sitting in a box in my study under a table for several months. Now I've got the MU1000 I don't really need it. I'll have a good think about it and let you know.

All for now,
Best regards,
SysExJohn
