Apparently, the SQL database used for this board somehow got corrupted within the last day or so and the board was down.  I did a quick 'repair' and things seem to be working, though we may have lost a couple of posts; not sure.

Well, I haven't been around since the 20th, so I don't know if anything's missing.
I see there are posts from yesterday, though...

Yeah, I think we're okay.  I have to get back in the habit of backing up the database on a regular basis...which I've just done.

phpBB will soon be introducing v3.0, which is completely different than v2 releases, and mods aren't compatible between the versions.  The database will be compatible, though, so I'm sure I'll update.

I've been running simulated QuestStudios servers for the past several days, from my home.  I'm playing with two operating systems on two PC's; Fedora 3 and Win2k.  The Fedora system is running Apache 2, php, MySQL at the moment.  The Win system is running Abyss HTTP server, and a FTP server called "Quick 'n Easy", and I want to add php, sendmail, and MySQL this week.  I also want to install phpBB on it.

I'm just experimenting with these systems to see how everything gets setup between my router and the servers.  The Win system is extremely easy to understand and operate...and thus far, very stable; the Fedora system has been a bugger to understand and configure, basically because the OS is completely new to me, but I know Linux is a more stable OS.  But by setting up a server through Windows, I've come to understand the concepts much easier when applying them to Linux.  Apache 2 is also available for 32bit Win systems, but it seemed very unstable on my system.  Might do better under XP.  I have two hardware firewalls in place, plus I'll be installing a software firewall on the server.

At this point, we're not certain if we'll be running our server via Fedora 3 or WinXP.  If our sites were big, corporate websites, there'd be no question.  We're still experimenting and learning, and since there's no rush, we have plenty of time to decide.

I don't recommend sendmail.  Basically, it's insecure and (more) difficult to configure.  Postfix is usually recommended in its place.

Of course, if you've already got it running, ignore this post.  Just a recommendation on a better place to spend your efforts setting up a MTA.
