Ok, until recently I recorded rendered MIDIs from my SC-8850 with the linein to a sound editting program in Windows 98. Since switching to Windows XP, using the very same audio application and the same equipment the sound from the linein for some reason sounds slightly tinny and distorted upon playback (although actually playing the synth through the linein and listening that way sounds as fine as ever...). If anyone could shed any light on this I'd be really greatful as I want to get some Audio CDs done for myself of my Top 10 Game themes!

Sorry for offtopic, which are your top 10 themes? If you ask me, I'm using Windows ME but with non-standart shell: Aston instead of Explorer. It all works quite good and sure Aston's better than Explorer. www.astonshell.com

I can probably shed some light on this. It's not OS related.. or at least shouldn't be. Are you using the same sound card? Are you recording from line in using the same sound driver? Is the volume on your two PC's set differently, for recording, or was your 8850 set to a different level? All these little things could do it (well, probably not the last bit). - Alistair

What is your sound card? Is Windows set to use its best resampling quality? What audio application?

Hi guys, This is the same machine that was running Windows 98, nothing has changed in hardware at all since the installation of Windows XP so I'm *hoping* that the hardware isn't to blame here. Nevertheless: SIS 7018 onboard sound Cool Edit Pro 2 for my linein Synth sc-8850 little sample up at: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~umgregor/ick.mp3I don't get why the program reads it in with that problem yet when I have it plugged in through the linein and I just listen to it normally it has no problems. :S

Hmm. I remeber that I had problem like yours - there was noise in every record. I just opened Soundvol32 (Windows standart application for volume control; I'm just using non-English Windows version now, so can't recall it's name ) and checked recording settings. I found there button 'additional' or something like this. When I clicked it I got window with checkbox labelled something about 'Mic 20 dB'. I disabled it and noise had gone. Maybe you find my silly story useful. And I think you schould check all audio options you can anyway.

Nope. Already tried that one... I know it's got to be something to do with recording because playback through line-in, straight to the speakers works fine! With no problems at all. I'm running out of things to check too, it's really bugging me. I've been meaning to make MP3 renderings for quite a while now and when I went back to do it, this happened. Bah. It's not so much noise as distortion.

I listened to the sample after captain Nemo brought the discussion back to life, and I could hear the distortion too. Hmm.
Things to check: * Sampling rate of input * "Clipping" (if amplitude of input signal exceeds what the hardware can accept)
I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Nope. Still not solved it... Still, it won't matter in a week or so because I have a new computer on it's way and that means an entirely new soundcard so all things going well I should have some sound captures quite soon for Mr Provider of Beneath a Steel Sky musics. ;-)

So, Blanka, how's things? I just thought that if you want I can record MT versions for you too. What if they're really much more cool? p.s. btw, my ICQ UIN is 328802321

If it's with a proper MT-32 and rendered properly then I'll offer 'special' favours. It was written for an MT-32 so that would be graaaand...
