For the midi test for an acoustic grand piano I would like to recommend the midi file used in this site's Digital Piano Shootout.  It's already got many mp3s of various samplers, synths, and other modules.

That's a very nice site for a digital piano MIDI test, George, thanks for the link info. And an extensive one at that. I'm currently downloading the Fantom X version right now and since I'm running on dial-up, its going to take an eternity just to listen to most of them.

Curiously, the SC-55 is not on the list. I would presume then that it wasn't good enough to include in the listening test? I'm listening to the MP3 right now and it does seem to be superior (Fantom X).

Tom: Diane is an expert listener to piano samples. Could you ask her opinion about the sound of the digital pianos on the site? Due to the overwhelming number of samples, perhaps she could sample just some pieces from Roland, Yamaha and Korg? If she's not busy...

Yes, thanks so much for this link, George. I really love the FantomX Ultra Gand sample. I also thought that the XV5080 has great pianos, but they are not nearly as good as the Fantom. Only the pianos from the SRX piano expension board sound good to me.

I don't think he's making a selection based on quality, otherwise you'd wonder why he included a test for Apple's QuickTime softsynth

You're right. My next guess would be that only modules and softsynths that are currently available on the retail market are included. Or that older synths are excluded anyway.

Thanks, George, it's a nice site and the piano tune is great! I was thinking of using an excerpt of Mussorgski's 'Pictures of an Exhibition' for the test, but this file really does a good job. It's a pity that no Sound Canvas Module is on the list. Maybe an option would be that each one of us would make a recording of the file using our own gear (I could use my SC-88Pro, because the Fantom X and the RD-170 versions are already there), and then asking the webmaster to put them on the list. Or, if you agree, I could contact him before and knowing if he would agree to do so.

On the other hand, the problem would be that the webmaster wouldn't want to do so, and in that case we should look for other solution (we couldn't use the very same midi file without his permission!).

There's another cute midi site that could be good for testing purposes on classic guitar: http://www.guitarsound.net/elixir/htm/menu.htm Really great arrangements!
