hey guys

im currently making a film for film class and am using some songs from the gabriel knight 3 soundtrack. i recently read that two people composed the music. Robert Holmes and a  guy named David Henry. I was under the impression that Robert Holmes wrote it all, however i guess i am wrong. this wouldn't be a huge deal but for my film i do have to give credit where credit is due, and thus i was wondering if anyone knows specifically who wrote which tracks? did one write most of them, or did they both write an equal number? did Robert Holmes just write the main theme?

if someone could help me (probably Tom would know best) that would be incredibly helpful.

thanks in advanced.

No, sorry, I don't.  I only know that David Henry was involved.  But Holmes' is kind of the Gabriel Knight music guy and I wouldn't worry about specifics at this point - I'd credit Holmes for the music.  Since you're using another's copyighted material, does it really matter?  Smiley  Neither Holmes or Henry own the music anyway -- it's the property of Vivendi Universal Games, Inc.

i realize that but my teacher wants us to be sure to give credit where it's due. lol.

i shall give holmes the credit because as you said, he seems to be the main guy.

i got to say, GK3 has an incredibly wonderful score. Way to go Holmes!

Is there any reason that both names can't be credited?  If not, I'd recomend that you go with that.

Although I never specifically asked how much and what aspects of the music each contributed, the impression I got from my correspondence with Robert Holmes is that David Henry did play a significant role in shaping the music, so he deserves credit alongside Holmes.  It sounded like it was more a matter of collaborating on pieces than writing them separately, often with Holmes working on themes and Henry arranging, though I certainly might be wrong in my inferences and recollection.  At any rate, you can hear a lot of stylistic elements in GK3's music that seem to be Henry's influence, judging by the Betrayal at Antara soundtrack, though of course there's still an unmistakable Holmes touch.

Good luck with your film project!

i think i shall just give credit like they do in the game (Music By: Robert Holmes) for the opening titles. for my closing titles i will do Music Composed by: Robert Holmes, music arranged by David Henry.

thanks again everyone.

From what I understand Holmes only wrote the main themes, which is to say the introduction theme and the ending music. Possibly also the music that is played through the movie sequences. Somehow you can tell this from the style.

There is some fantastic music in the game and unmistakenly Holmes-style.

Henry pretty much focused on the large volume of ingame background music and many of the piano tunes that are available ( for example the Rennes music, the Nocturne piece at Montreaux place) and also the somewhat mid-eastern type music such as for Emilio Baza.

Perhaps for the same reason Mark Seibert got credited for his contributions, even though he did not compose much of it Cool

I expect Holmes was the music director for the game and got assisted by Henry or something. He is resposible for the end-result, but I'm pretty much sure Henry composed a large quantity of it.

Still, it's the Holmes themes that you will remember after some time and not Henry's pieces.
