Thanks, Tom!

Wow, there's a lot of music in that game.  I played QFG3 years ago and really enjoyed it - don't think I can remember each piece though!  Perhaps time for me to replay.

Yes, some nice stuff here. Haven't had a chance to listen through yet..

A few missing pieces, a few weird MT-32 piccolos, and some funny track orders, but such is life Smiley Some very nice recordings, in fact quite a lot in this case. Would that the 'soundtrack complete' had been recorded.

Oh yes- why were some of the SFX removed from the Intro piece? I really liked those.. (e.g. the crystal as the intro moves from the Ad Avis Battle back to Aziza in her place).

Is there anybody who can email me the MIDI files for these missing pieces?  I'd appreciate it!

There are no MT-32 piccolos used in this digital soundtrack.

and some funny track orders

I've mentioned this any number of times, but I guess one more time won't hurt.  Users are encouraged to listen to these music files (and all other digital soundtracks song files posted here for that matter) in any order they wish.  I typically record Sierra music as I play through the games, in the order I encounter the themes...not as someone else may.  If the order I've presented them is not as you would like to hear them, or not as you feel they should be, by all means...rename the track numbers as you desire.  Honestly, I won't be offended ... umm, nor will I know -- or care.

For some reason, this seems to be an issue that keeps popping up.

It depends.. will I ever get a reply for the PM I sent a week or so ago?

Funny thing, cooperation. I'm sure I'd be inclined to be much more so with regards to QuestStudios if I got even a tenth of it back..

Regardless, I could've sworn that MT-32 piccolos were used. Must be some other bad MT-32 woodwind (well, you know what I mean, the instrument isn't bad [I *like* MT woodwinds], just sounds bad where you used it). In the Pool of Peace and Hero's Hut tracks. Maybe you replaced the piccolos, or maybe it's a recorder or something, and I'm losing my mind..

Forget the track order comment, then. I just would have thought it was logical to present *soundtracks*, that are to be burned to CD, in the most appropriate order. But leaving it to the fans is another solution, fair enough, it won't be raised again.

Funny thing, opinions.  As the saying goes, they're a lot like assholes - everybody has one.  You frequently offer yours as though it were fact.

Alistair, in other circles you criticize Tom's work even more than you do here.  I've seen examples of it.  When you bad-mouth Tom's work so regularly,  is it any wonder that he does not want your cooperation?

In the past, I have expressed to you as politely as I can the importance of offering your commentary in a constructive manner.  I have also extended favors to you, such as the DVDs I mailed to Australia at my expense, as an overture of peace.  Yet still you attack Tom, recently calling his work a "disgrace," and then you accuse him of being uncooperative!

Clue #1: Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.  In other words, if something is free, don't expect much credit for your complaints.

Clue #2: Don't be a broken record.  If you make a suggestion and Tom does not implement it (ie, track order), assume that it will continue not to be implemented and stop bringing the topic up again and again.

Clue #3: Actions speak louder than words.   Nothing prevents you from offering up .m3u files to re-order the tracks in your preferred order.  You could call them "Chronological Track Order" or something like that.  Direct links to m3u files can be posted on the message board   without breaking the rules.  This might even be a more constructive way to attract attention to tracks you believe are missing, because you can create placeholders in the m3u file to stir discussion in a non-antagonistic way.

Well, maybe I'll load up the game and try to find it.  I really want to complete this soundtrack, mainly, so I can hear all the music.  It's consuming me -- I've been listening to the entire soundtrack every day on my way to work for the past week!  Smiley

Yes, rather a problem of mine. Highlights bad points of my own, and disguises the good ones.. Probably the worst aspect of my personality I've shown at this place.

I owe Tom everything, with regards to music. I have the utmost respect for him. He's an awesome musician.. from time to time I make stupid comments, that is true. I don't think your first statement is true, though..

I'm not sure that I spend regular amounts of my time 'bad-mouthing' QuestStudios, either.. though I do agree I've said a lot of negative things in the past. Which, to be slightly fair to myself, are usually taken out of context.. but I have to be fair to what you're saying as well, and it's certainly not wrong, Marten.

I'm fully aware, and you're dead right.

I wasn't aware those DVD's were an 'overture of peace', though. Smiley I must be more wary of 'strangers bearing gifts'.. ;P

I don't know that I 'attack' Tom either (though it IS a fine line). Comments I make about certain specific examples of work aren't personal attacks, and are very minor criticisms. I make over the top comments in certain circles to illustrate points, rather than to attack.. if you know what I mean. I think I know where the disgrace comment came from. That was NOT calling his work a 'disgrace', and I resent the implication, because it's simply not true.. the dynamics of that particular comment were from a (basically) outside issue which did not reflect on music quality per se.. but anyway, this isn't the time or place. Smiley

It's certainly not the black-and-white picture you paint, John, where I reguarlly make baseless attacks on Tom. The guy's created no end of fantastic music/quality recordings. But he gets it wrong sometimes.. and I do feel I'm entitled to my opinion. But sure as hell, I need to be a lot more careful.

I get annoyed at things like QFG1, where he asked for opinions, I gave a list of suggestions, all of which were ignored, which other fans thought had at least some merit- end result, various tracks missing. That doesn't benefit me, that doesn't benefit QuestStudios.. you know where I'm coming from? I want what's best for the *fans*. That's always been my position, and don't expect it to change..

Well, I do see where you're coming from with that. Can't argue with that Smiley

EDIT: Actually, I don't like that reasoning very much at all, now that I think about it! That's a really poor argument.

It's not like I make threads about track order, I usually mention it as a side issue (probably accidentally), but yes, again, you're right.

I'm a bit sceptical about this.. I certainly won't be doing it. I think we've done track order to death, and you've focused on it when I believe it's not the most important issue..

All I believe in is being able to have a voice that can dissent, that can say 'make that guitar louder!', rather than simply another useless pat on the back, another sheep in the crowd that isn't constructive or useful, someone who can listen to one track and say 'Tom, that piece is masterful!', and then say 'Wish you'd used this string variation instead of that one in the next piece, though..'

But, it's never done me much good, and not many other people either.. still.
I respect entirely what you've said, Marten, and largely it's quite fair and correct. Just try and view the whole picture.. some of what you've said is a bit concerning to me. I don't go around holding secret anti-QuestStudios chatroom meetings.. Something people always seem to lose sight of is how much I owe to Tom and how much I respect and value his work. Probably also how much I listen to it!

Anyways, thanks for that, got a few things off my chest and competently replied to your message in one. Smiley

I'm off to listen to some old Sierra tracks- one of the various with lots of Tom's good, old, recordings.

Regards,
- Alistair

P.S. I can dig up those QFG3 MIDI files on the weekend if anyone's interested.. I think I should have all the ones not included in the QFG3GM.MID file. About 5 tracks I think.

Never heard that expression before, but I love it!  (With or without the "and they all stink" part - it's great)

Hey Tom-

The link for the CD Label does not seem to be working.

Also, what program do you use to convert the OGG Vorbis files into an audio CD?

I haven't uploaded the CD Label yet...I just don't like it.  Was hoping someone else may take a crack at it.  But I can upload what I have in the mean time, I suppose.

I use WinAmp to convert from Ogg to WAV.  It's really easy, and I've posted a step-by-step here.  Normally, I use the original WAV files for my CD's, but I just burned an 'Ogg-to-WAV' converted CD for QFG3 and it sounds really good -- I can't tell the difference between the original WAV and these converted tracks.

Thanks Tom.

I've used WinAmp to convert to WAV before but I thought there was a thread somewhere stating Nero 6 can now do OGG Vorbis directly to Audio CD.

Anyway, I appreciate the info!

Yes, Nero 6 can do that.  I misunderstood.  I haven't burned an "Ogg" CD -- wonder if it'll playback in my car's CD player?   :?:  Does Nero actually convert the Ogg to CDA tracks...which I imagine, would be quite huge in comparison to the Ogg tracks.

Nero 6 converts the OGG files to WAV on the fly as it burns. It means your computer must be able to convert them fast enough to keep up with the burning speed. With today's burners though I guess they would just slow down to the converting speed so the CD doesn't turn into a coaster. )

Thanks Tom, you have a great deal of helpful hints and procedures on your site.  Previously I was converting Ogg Vorbis to MP3 to burn CDs.  Not very efficient since MP3 tends to lose audio quality.  After reading this I know how to use WinAmp to go directly to WAV.

Not only do you have tons of great music, but a very helpful "knowledge base" built up as well.

I've recorded the Leopardman Battle Theme, and Alistair has sent me a few MIDI files with two additional themes I'll be posting on the QFG3 Digital Soundtrack page.   They'll be additions to the soundtrack (at least for now.)  That is, I won't be changing all the existing track numbers to fit these songs in at more appropriate locations in the overall soundtrack.  Perhaps at a later date...

----------------

Wow - a new "Temple Of Tarna" theme that I've never heard before!  I've posted an arrangement of it (just the part that's not already included in the Intro/Opening Theme.)  I'd really like to play around with this one, someday.  It's a beautiful song that I'd like to explore further.

Wow, all these others QFG3 songs coming out the woodwork!  I wonder how many songs are generally not heard by most gamers when playing Sierra games.  There were always those sections of games where very few people went to - the parts that weren't necessary to help get to the end goal.

Tom, you do such a great job in finding and recording all these tracks, and it's fantastic when the community helps out and sometimes uncovers these little hidden treasures.

Tom and Alistair do not always agree on whether a specific piece is "worthy" of inclusion in a soundtrack, but it sounds like they've found some harmony in this case. Smiley  (pun intended.)
