Hi! I'm new in here, nice to know that there are also many freaks like me, who likes also these old sierra quest games. Good old time! Now my problem: I've found my "Quest for Glory" series. "Quest for Glory Part I" I've already finished and it works perfectly with the DOS Emulator "Dos-Box", also the sound worked perfectly. Now I wanted to start "Quest for Glory Part II - Trial by Fire". I also use the same "Dos-Box"-Emulator. I've a Windows 2000 system. But now the game shuts down after a few minutes. First the screen developed into a complete graphical error. I mean, the screen turns almost completely into dark. I can only still see my hero and some particular people. After that, the game exits, hangs up, doesnt work anymore, you understand? (I'm not a native english speaker, so I try my best to explain my problem.) If anyone can help me, it'll be great. Thanks in advance for your help! Greetings, Hero

I have NEVER had that problem before, though I did somehow get an Oops! error the other day.
I DO still get errors in the Windows version of QFG4, however.

Hi!
Thanks for answering! So which way to you choose for using the game? I mean how do you play the game? Perhaps I've still made a mistake?

I use the same settings I use for 1VGA and 3.
I don't have anything set up for 1EGA though.

What is this setting about "1VGA and 3"? What do you mean with that? Do i have to do any graphic settings before starting the game?
I mount the folder and then directly start Hero's Quest 2, and nothing else. Are there any other settings to do/possible?

Whcih did you play when you played QFG1? QFG1VGA (the new version), or QFG1EGA (the old version)? And did you try QFG2 without DOSBOX? I wrote a better reply, but the forum ate my post. - Alistair

I seriously doubt QuestStudios has a problem with me dishing out tech support, even on forums I don't run. Ignoring Honda's comment (best thing to do with it really!), I think I should probably have said 'there was an error when I posted, initially'. I don't know why it happened, could well have been an issue on my end. But this is all irrelevant! Just reply soon, Hero, and I'll try my best to help you out. Though the combo of DOSBOX and Win 2k isn't exactly my ideal way to run QFG2.. - Alistair

Ignoring Honda's comment (best thing to do with it really!) I get the impression that I've hurt your feelings, Alistair. It wasn't my intention really. I'm just curious what happend to your post that was supposedly eaten up by the forum. I didn't even get the chance to read it. I don't believe forums delete posts on a random manner (although there was one time that Tom thought he unknowingly deleted my post).

There was probably a server glitch; the response was sent, but not posted because of a time-delay issue. It's happened to me. I'm going to be updating the server hardware in a couple of weeks, though I suspect the underlying cause for glitches, slow-downs, etc. is Windows XP. Linux Fedora is looking better to me every day.

Hi Alistair!
Thanks for the answer!
I think I played QFG1VGA, because in the setup there was the option to choose VGA graphic cards.
And yes, I already tried QFG2 without the emulator "Dos-Box". And it does function, but without any sound. And that's not the best solution. If there's a possibility to turn the sound on in the normal "cmd", I mean the normal dos command box, it would be a good solution, but I dont know how to turn the sound on in the normal dos command box.
Greetings, Hero

I don't think trying to turn on sound in DOS prompt will help. Windows 2000 doesn't allow DOS type communication of the sound card, hence you won't get anything besides PC Speaker. While PC Speaker is all good and fun, it's not the best choice.
Perhaps you need to use VDMSound, which allows sound emulation in Windows 2000. I've never used it though, as I prefer to run these games on my Windows 98 SE laptop.
Perhaps someone here has some VDMSound experience? I'm probably mistaken in a few things in this post.
The only thing I remember about it is to set the emulation to a port, IRQ, and DMA that the game can recognize.

I can get QFG2 working in Win XP, but Win 2000? Hmm. I think I played QFG1VGA, because in the setup there was the option to choose VGA graphic cards Right. That would work fine in DOSBOX. What sound are you trying to use with QFG2? That'd be a good start. Yes, I've noticed that the QS webpages (especially forums) take a long time to load compared to most other sites I visit. I look forward to you scrapping XP one of these days! I get the impression that I've hurt your feelings, Alistair. It wasn't my intention really. I'm just curious what happend to your post that was supposedly eaten up by the forum. Not at all, the comment simply irked me because it had no meritorious value. Noone said forums randomly delete posts, either.. but I think Tom's adequately clarified the situation. - Alistair

Now, I play the game under the windows emulated dos box (cmd). I tried the first option --> Adlib Synthesizer, but nothing happens, there is no sound during the game. How can I get sound into the game without having any graphical problems like I had with "Dos-Box" ? Please help me! Thanks in advance Hero

First of all, try using VDM Sound (Google for it). Install it (VDM Sound)and install the game (QFG2) using Adlib for music (or get the General MIDI driver if you have a GM sound card). Run the executable (sciv.exe) with VDM Sound by right-clicking it and selecting 'Run with VDMS'. EDIT: The above is assuming that just by running QFG2 normally something happens.. It's quite possible that this mgiht not bring about either sound support or a working game under Win2000 though. Keep me informed - Alistair

Thanks again for answering.
I havent managed installing VDM Sound yet, but I'll try it. I'll inform you what I've reached with it.

By the way, now I've accomplished the second part "Quest for Glory 2 - Trial by fire" with my fighter, and now, till I have no sound in "Quest for Glory 2" go on with part 3. But when I searched for the third and fourth part in my cellar, there was a sad thing to find, the disks where already destroyed, I think they were... I dont know the right word .... "dismagnetisied".
Do you have any idea, where to get the third and fourth part of the "Quest for Glory" series???
I've searched the internet but found no results.

As mentioned in your other post, ebay would be a good place to start. If your search there yields negative results now, perhaps later it will turn up.
