Sierra also had an AGI version of KQ4 with older graphics (resolution of 200x160 pixels IIRC) as you can see in this picture:

That AGI version came out for the Apple IIc/IIe, the Apple IIgs and the IBM PC.  I don't believe it would have came out for the Atari ST or the Amiga, both computers guaranteed to handle the SCI interpreter at their minimum specs.

AARRRGH!!  I can't make the emulator work.  Sad

Never mind.  Got one of them going and well... without working keyboard/joystick support it was just silly.

Thexder had sampled sounds but NO MUSIC!  Sad
Silpheed sounded nice for the few seconds I could play without movement control.

All in all.... cute, but nothing to write home about.

I know it will never happen, but if VU were to actually release compilations of the Quest games, then I wish they'd at least include the option to play the games with IIgs sound.  I'd like to see options that tie all of the different versions together so you're not restricted just to the DOS version and include optional enhancements too like the graphical overlays DosBox and other emulators use.

However, I still remember the crushing disappointment when I read in the Sierra magazine that starting with KQ5 they would no longer be making games for IIgs.  Being about 9 years old at the time, I read that article over and over again, hoping that eventually the words would change, or something.  Somehow it didn't really occur to me that, rather than mourning, I could have just hoped to get a PC one day.  And obviously I did.

King's Quest IV probably barely got released for IIgs too.  It has both AGI and SCI versions and it looks like the IIgs got the AGI version since there were never any SCI games for IIgs.  I didn't even know KQ4 was ever in SCI until I played the version that came with my King's Quest Collection.  I was disappointed when Apple said they would no longer be supporting the IIgs either and put everything into the Mac.  And then I eventually got a Mac and played all of my other Sierra games there.  But I pretty much missed the early SCI era except for the games I managed to get and play on a huge Tandy laptop with a tiny screen.  I hooked it up to my Commodore 64 monitor so I could play in black and white instead of grey and blue.  That allowed me to play Conquests of Camelot, and Hero's Quest.  Both were worth the effort and remain two of my favorite games of all time.

And then I was disappointed when Quest for Glory IV was canceled for the Mac.  But I didn't let that stop me.  I got a DOS compatibility card for my Mac and played QFG4 and Betrayal and Krondor.
