I've finally recorded an Ogg of a GS version I made of the King's Quest VI Closing Scenes music. I did this one a very long time ago.
Have a listen.

I had forgotten how good the original SC-55 could sound.  Nice job!

This wouldn't be the GS file I helped you out with, would it? How long ago now? Scary, how time flies.

Downloading now.

EDIT: Wow! It is too. That 'Orchestra' patch variation 8 for Strings sounds evil (as in, lousy), as do a couple other patches, but I guess that's just the SC-55 in the other cases. What I'm really impressed with isn't the MIDI arrangement but the digital quality! How crisp are your recordings man?!?! Those cymbals. Wow! I still can't get over the cymbals.

I remember you disliked the orchestra patch back then too.
Well, at least you're consistant.

I happen to like them, so I'll keep them.
I will note, however, that I did add a supporting track of strings to make it sound a little more fluent.

Aha, that's what you did, I noticed.

Orchestra variation? Out of all the string patches on all the 4 modules I have, it's the least realistic of them *all*. And I mean that. It sounds like bad strings, hashed horns in one- so I don't (and never have) used it. However I *do* like ED's Orchestra 2 and 4, 2 for ochestral music (go figure) and 4 for brooding strings. They're nice patches.

The best strings I've found are ED Strings variation 4, or "Bright Strings #4". Like the SC-55's, but more realistic and 'bigger'. Smiley

I like Yamaha XG's strings too.. more realistic than Roland's on the whole, but sometimes don't work so well (the whole Roland -> Yamaha hard to convert thing).

I once worked on enhancing the Closing theme. it's one of the best KQ6 pieces, IMO. I'll have to make an ED version sometime soonish and post MIDI/OGG versions to give an idea of what I mean, Ari. Smiley An XG version too, since I've only ever done *one* XG conversion- for my Eco Quest 2 soundtrack CD (XG has nice jungle sounds). But that, as they say, is another story..
