I've made a couple of crude recordings as played-back with the CM-32LN. I once thought that this device had the most "balanced" output, but I'm not so sure now. I hope to make the same recordings on the various companion devices for comparison.

The following is from the Space Quest III introduction. Check out that horrible vibrato.

The next is from Eric the Unready.

And this followed the recording of the previous two, and is simply me playing a guitar into a $2 microphone for kicks, having absolutely nothing to do with the CM-32LN.

What's the 'CM32LN'? I've only heard of a 'CM32L'.

The CM-32LN is a quite rare MT-32 compatible device which was created mainly for the PC98 japanese computer standard (it has a special connector, besides MIDI, for direct connection to the computer). Externally it's a bit smaller and thinner than the CM-32L, with no external controls (only on/off switch and volume potentiometer), and grey-coloured.

Doesn't sound any different from the CM-500 to my ears.

Maybe I should post a recording of me trying to play "Greensleeves" on a MIDI keyboard...

Thanks, Shadowfax. I wonder what a PC98 connector looks like. Smiley

Hmm.
I noticed that they both oscillate similarly. During a side-by-side though, the CM-32LN vibrato (during the SQ3 example) seemed "harsher" than on the CM-500. This difference may have been lost in the compression. I'll post the uncompressed WAV later tonight.

I wouldn't mind. I have quite a few song ideas I'd like to record, just to get an opinion from others as to which direction I might take them.

The connector is found on the PC-98xx notebooks. I posted a picture of the back of the CM-32LN on this thread. I did not take a picture of the 110-pin connector on the back of the notebook, but it's about 2.5x wider than the corresponding CM-32LN connector.

I've added a download for the WAV recording of the SQ3 sample.

I still don't hear a difference, but maybe you just have better ears than I have. Smiley
