I've just downloaded new version of LSL3 digital soundtrack, recorded on Roland FX beauty. OH MY GOD, that is AWESOME! MT-32 sounds compare to that baby like general MIDI SoundBlaster crap! Gimmie more :-D!!!

But seriously - I am talking to the guy that made that files - look man, you possess the THING that I will never have so could you be so kind and add at least Space Quest III Soundtrack? You could also throw in Codename: Iceman in the package... Whadya say buddy?

Main reason- Iceman and SQ3 use a lot of strange MT-32 instruments. The Fantom XR won't always be able to a 'straight conversion', i.e. all instruments don't always have an equivalent on the XR (eg PinkBass, JelloGun, etc.).

LSL3 has a lot of 'instrumenty' instruments, that is, flutes, pizz, piano etc.

That said, I wouldn't mind hearing some tracks done with it- like some early Iceman Bar ones.

Alistair is right, some (many, in fact) sierra soundtracks use extensively custom made instruments and sounds that are very difficult to play in a synth other than the MT-32. So in order to make a conversion, the soundtrack has to use mostly "normal" instruments. On the other hand, the Fantom XR does not follow neither GS, nor XG nor MT-32 standards, so the conversion is a pretty hard work (mostly hand-made), even if the instrument sounds are "normal" ones.

BTW- Look forward for more conversions in the future Smiley

That's a little harsh, don't you think? While some of the MT-32's instruments lack any realism, it's still a great module, and has some of the highest quality sounds even compared to modern synths.

Don't take it too seriously.  I don't think he's too familiar with "classic" synthesizers such as MT-32.  To him, he probably hears a more "real" sound with Fantom XR, and who can blame him?  The Fantom does sound much more realistic; but I, like many of you probably do, prefer the original sounds over the "realistic" sound of the Fantom XR.  Don't get me wrong, I think the XR adds a unique twist in the soundtrack, and it sounds awesome- but for nostalgia's sake, I prefer MT-32.

I don't like the comparison much either. What some people don't realise is that the MT-32 has some very realistic sounds- in LSL3, take 'The Comedy Hut', and the clarinet lead. Awesome Smiley

That said, a lot of the instruments in LSL3 are poor, like the brass, tuba, strings, some guitars and basses, etc.
In fact, other than those it's not so much that the instruments are poor, it's just that they sound very bare because Tom did his CD before he had more advanced synths. I guarantee people would prefer Tom's CD to these new Fantom recordings if he had recorded it this year, say.

And hell, some of those Fantom instruments sound very unrealistic to my ears as well (or at least how they were translated/converted). The drums are nice, as are the saxes, but the pianos and brass, and quite a few others used in LSL3, don't sound that great.
