I've come to the last battle with the dragon, but I'm unable to kill it because the game always freezes or gives me a runtime error. Anyone else experienced this and perhaps know of a workaround?

Running Windows XP with AMD Athlon XP 3000+ and 512 MB RAM.
(Executing QG5 in Windows 98 compatibility mode.)

Do you have the version 1.2 patch applied?

Yes, I have the 1.2 patch installed.

Here's a pic by the way:

I find QFG5 runs better in Windows 2000 compatibility mode when running it in Windows XP.  If I run it in any other mode the audio is all messed up.

Anyway, that end sequence has given me trouble before.  Have you tried it a bunch of times?  I noticed on your screenshot Toro is dead.  My game sometimes crashes if Gort dies.

I'd suggest trying it without offering to sacrifice yourself or asking anyone else to sacrifice themselves, and try to keep Toro and Gort alive by giving them healing potions.  Either one of them dying seems to trigger the game to crash.

I've tried numerous times but it always crashes at some point. The game won't even start in Windows 2000 mode.

Does anybody have a savegame just before the dragon dies? Want to see the ending ... although it would probably be different from what my ending would look like.

As Ghostrider said, keep Gort or Toro alive -- the prophecy says someone must sacrifice their life to defeat the dragon...

From “The Binding Of  The Dark”, the Tome of Magic Text found in
Shakra’s Shop of Magic written by Magister Aristotle, last Sorcerer of
Silmaria:
"With the willing sacrifice of the Wizards of ancient Atlantis, the Doom
was bound.  Only with the willing sacrifice may the Dark Dragon ever be
destroyed."

To see the "ending" movie and the others, just look on the QFG5 CD-Roms:

QFG5_INSTALL disc
folder INSTALL\DATA\MOV

01.MOV -- QFG5 Trailer -- Awesome!
02.MOV -- Sierra FX opening logo
03.MOV -- Yosemite Entertainment opening logo

QFG5_GAME disc
folder DATA\MOV

04.MOV -- The Dark Dragon Awakens from the Temple Of Blood
05.MOV -- The Dark Dragon Escapes Mt. Draconis
06.MOV -- The Dark Dragon Defeated

All should be QuickTime 3 MOVs.  At least, that's the version of QT that QFG5 installs on your computer.

When you win, #06 plays; when you lose the final battle, #05 plays.  It's no different for any character type (fighter / magician / thief / paladin).

As for the ending-ending, getting to be king or the chief thief, I cannot help you there.  Sorry.

I tried to save it after I defeat the dragon - but you can't save it, the "Save" button is shaded out.  I can only save it just before I start the second battle with the dragon, once it is in the air.
