What a coincidence -- we were just discussing this.

According to the latest PC Gamer magazine (150th issue, July 2006), the 1991 game Out Of This World (its US title, actual name is Another World) has gotten an update (page 024).

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the game, Eric Chahi (the writer, designer and developer of OOTW) has re-released the game with Win9x and WinXP support, and updated the backgrounds and character animations with higher-res images.

With legions of fans (Mobygames.com recently named it the #1 DOS game of all time), Chahi wanted to give something back.

According to the article, you can download the demo at:

www.anotherworld.fr/anotherworld_uk/

They could do it better. Sad
Look at the old 3DO screenshot:

Personally, I think the XP version looks better than the 3DO version.

That particular site is a little confusing.

The first picture is the DOS version.
The second picture is the WinXP version.
The third picture is the 3DO version.

The WinXP version is more true to the original in terms of background art... it looks more hand-crafted.  The 3DO version has a background that screams of being rendered to look realistic; yet the main character still looks hand-drawn.  So there is a style clash there.

Heart of Darkness
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

Prince Of Persia 2 (Macintosh SuperVGA Version)

More importantly, it was for SegaCD only.

I'd like to play the SegaCD version of this, Silpheed VR and Sorcerian with the much, much nicer soundtrack.

You might also enjoy Blackthorne (available for SNES and PC at least), another game in the same vein.

Heart of the Alien was a half-official "sequel" (a parallel story, actually) released by Interplay and based on many concept ideas provided by Eric Chahi, but not implemented by him. According to Eric, the results were less than satisfying.
