I’ve created a new, public music database which will allow members to upload files (MP3, Ogg, WMA, MID) to the Quest Studios server.  This database is primarily designed for those who want to share music files with other members, but have no other place to upload them.  I’ve had to implement several limitations to this ‘music database’ in order to curtail excessive bandwidth usage on my server:

-   Users of this music database will be required to register and be approved.  (This is to block potential spammers.)
-   After uploading, all files will first require approval before they are actually moved into a public display area.
-   Each registered member is limited to ~5.0 MB’s of server space.

Five megabytes is a lot of space for MIDI files, but is extremely limiting for digital files.  Therefore, large files will have to be deleted to make room for more files to be placed in your account.  Furthermore, the total size of this database is 100 MB’s, so membership and file storage will be further limited.  The music database was primarily designed to serve as a means to create a place to upload files for those who don’t otherwise have a place to store files -- but it’s also available for those who just want to share multimedia files with other Quest Studios members.

Anyone is welcome to register, check out, and use the database.  This database may provide additional options along the way, and I’m always open for suggestions…

Thanks for the addition Tom. This was desperately needed. There has been so much music I wanted others on QS to hear but no means to do it.

Awesome that we can now Cheesy

I should add that this database also excepts almost any other kind of file as well:  ZIP, PDF, DOC, JPG, GIF, etc.

Awesome!  This would have been really useful when I had that Bandstand software.

Tom, excellent idea.

One question, however- why not makit it slightly larger, say, 10 MB each and 200MB? Last week, Maxime's 8 MB Heart of China X5DR recording would not meet your requirements. It's not like you're space starved or anything.

This is a great idea Tom!

I don't want to sound to greedy, but for once I agree with Alistair. 5MB might be a little too little, maybe. Most MP3/Ogg files would max it out quite easily, I think, especially if you want to post something in high quality.

If you could spare some more room and bandwidth, I think it might be better, but it's your call.

Well, I'd be possibly thinking more like 15-20 MB and 500 MB, but I gave a conservative initial estimate just to keep more or less in line.

Agree, for once? We agree more than that, Ari. We're just too similar to each other and clash. Wink But, a lot of the threads we clashed on in the past were pretty ridiculous, anyway. It wouldn't happen that way again.

I have to first see how often, and for what, it's being used.  I'm sharing this space with two other databases so I am limited.  Unfortunately, the software doesn't allow for off-server file storage.  If that were the case, I'd have no limitations.  But it's being run from my QuestStudios.com server, where I do have limitations.  I'll check to see if there's a hack that DOES allow off-server file storage...

This is a really cool idea, Tom.  Now if I want to let any people interested to hear what my band sounds like, I can upload a file to share with all.
