The question: is there any functional benefit at all to owning an Adlib card if you have a Sound Blaster card?

While we all know that the Sound Blaster incorporates all Adlib functionality and both cards use the same FM and DAC chips (YM3812 & YM3014) and I/O addresses (388h-389h) and come with an analog volume control, yet there could be differences between the two cards.

First, could the glue logic that interfaces each card to the PC bus be different enough that the two cards may work differently in some way?

Second, could the amplifiers and filters of each card shape the resulting FM synthesis to the point that you can perceive noticeable sound differences between the two cards playing back the same song?

Highly doubtful.  I used the Adlib for two years before the first supported game ever even came out.  I still noticed no perceptible difference.

I keep my classic AdLib card for sentimental reasons.  I should mount it in a nifty display case.  Smiley
