The MOTU MTPII interface in my MIDI setup was designed for Mac connectivity, and has heretofore been used solely as a standalone router/patchbay (which it's been great as). I am looking to acquire one of the newer, MTP AV units, which will allow for connection to my Windows 95 PC via the parallel port. Once networked, the two MTPs will be visible as one 16-in/out interface.

So here's the problem...

Windows 95's MMSYSTEM.DLL has a 10 (plus 1 pseudo) MIDI IN/OUT port limitation.

Some people claim that the Windows 98 version of said DLL does not have the same bug, while others state that it wasn’t fixed until Windows XP.

Does anyone know for sure?

I love when I answer my own question.

It seems that the limitation is with the number of active MIDI ports, and not the number of installed ports, as I initially thought.

I substituted the DLL from both Windows 98, and from a debug version of Windows 95, and did not experience the same anomaly with either. Though they probably have a limit too, these DLL versions support at least sixteen simultaneous open ports.

Yes there's some limitation.
Got the same problem on my dedicated Win98 machine for Gigastudio.
Windows 95 supports up to 10 MIDI ports (160 MIDI channels) with a 'pseudo' 11th port, while Windows 98 supports 15 MIDI ports (240 MIDI channels) with 'pseudo' 16th port.

Yeah, the DLL swap worked like a charm. I suppose one of these days I ought to see if the debug version actually has a limitation.

On another note, what happened to the radio on your website? It was your recording of the Double Dragon 3 AdLib tunes that got me interested in the Vibrants' stuff.

22 open MIDI outputs: no problems.
19 open MIDI inputs: no problems.

That's a lot of MIDI I/O. Smiley

If the debug DLL does have a port limit, it's beyond my means of determining...
