"ELEC.SHOCK" is taking advantage of another "bug" in the 00 MT-32, this one having to do with the maximum amount of Pitch that can be applied before the sound distorts (it cuts out entirely above A#6 -27). Believe it or not, what you're hearing with the 01 MT-32 and CM-modules is the actual "programmed" patch, minus the hardware limitation.

Ah, I wonder if that explains the guitar in Ski or Die.

Hmm. I've never played the game, but the guitar might be clipping. It's not related to the pitch issue, else it would sound just fine on the CM-32L.

Well I've uploaded the CM-32L and MT-32 versions. The part where the CM-32L crackles is at around 1:40.

CM-32L (Done by Talus on Kohina)
MT-32

I haven't a clue if it is clipping or not, if it was, I would have expected other parts of the music to clip too.

Clipping. MT-32 and CM-32L clip at different places, because the cause is different.
