What is it you don't understand about DOSBox?  Are you receiving errors when trying to run KQ6 through DOSBox?

DosBox' documentation is very useful to understand all its options, and it's well worth its reading. Be sure you're using the correct options. You'll probably need to edit some parameters of the config file, and then use KQ6's config utility.

Are you sure this is the CD version of the game?

Well... One difference I can think of, is that the intro should have a scene in which the camera is following a seagull....

Well, I'm thinking you should give up.  If you can't tell whether or not you have the CD or the floppy version of the game (which should be easily discernible by the size of the game data) and you can't figure out how to use DOSBox from the detailed readme that comes with it then you should quit now because it isn't going to get any easier or more intuitive from here on out.

I wouldn't discourage him so fast.

nightstarquest: The fact that you didn't see any seagull means that this probably isn't the CD version, so you won't hear the characters talking. If you want to continue playing this non-talkie version, and want some sound, you need to use DOSBox. I don't really understand what problems you're running into with the program, so I recommend you try and be a little more specific. Is it the DOS interface?

DOSBox requires a "DOS-like" interaction in running the software.  If one has never experienced anything other than the graphical interface of Windows, I can see how it might appear difficult to understand DOSBox...a little, anyway.

Illegally?  Probably.  KQ6 isn't offered from Sierra On-Line or Vivendi as a "download".  It has to be purchased on a CD or diskette.  Since the game is no longer being sold by Sierra, you'd probably have to buy it from someone on Ebay.  The "CD-ROM" version of the game includes voices and additional animated sections in the game's introduction cartoon.  The diskette version does not include these.  The COMPLETE GAME is on both formats.

When you install the game, a list of supported sound devices are provided.  Since you don't have one of the sound devices on the list, using DOSBox will probably give you "Sound Blaster-like" support.

Not quite sure what you're asking with that sentence.

Are you able to load and play KQ6?  If so, then you should be able to also have some sort of sound support under DOSBox.  If you have the diskette version of the game, there will be no voices.  If you have the CD-ROM version of the game, there will; though the CD-ROM version should function under Windows...without DOSBox...and your soundcard should be supported via Windows.

That's right. You need the CD versions of the games to have voices. The voices are not included on the disk versions. The new King's Quest Compilation release does have all the games and all the CD versions so that's your best bet.

It's designed for XP users, though should run the same on Win2k.  The new compilation also uses DOSBox to run some of the older games.  Smiley

It works on Win98 through to XP. It just says it's XP compatible because that was the big thing with those games. They weren't XP compatible. Just a selling point. The CD says it works for Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP.
