Someone feeling adventurous?  The original Sound Blaster (a.k.a. "killer card" before launch) featured CMS Game Blaster chips and Adlib's FM.  Games *could* have been developed to use both simultaneously to great potential!

Anyone want to combine MP3's of CMS and Adlib playing the same song?  Something like Silpheed's level 1 "Silph of Wind" or just about anything.

Eh?  Up to it?  Could be cool.  Wink

(Of course, it won't be a true demonstration of its abilities - as parts could have been distributed across the different technologies - not just doubled like this example would make.)

12 voices of square wave synthesis + 9 voices of FM synthesis + 1 digital sound channel.  Quite the powerhouse, really.  Too bad no games supported both.  Also, I don't know whether it would sound correctly at all if they chips were not properly mixed on the card.

Didn't Loom support both CMS and Adlib?

Many games supported both CMS and Adlib, but I am aware of none that supported them both at the same time.  Most people did not own both, but on the Sound Blaster they could be made to sign in unison.

That's kinda' the whole point I'm getting at -- the original SoundBlaster was really underused.  They could have had both techs playing music simultaneously...  those square-waves laying down some heavy bass and solid chords, while the FM synth supports the bass with a bigger sound, and a two-channel solo instrument (with maybe a third channel for an echo effect) and the FM's better drums, too.

I'm hoping someone can take a CMS and AdLib MP3/WAV recording of the same song and play them together for a vague idea of what it could have been like.  Smiley

I'm unaware of any game that supported any 2 sound devices at the same time. I think Bluemax wanted a remix like Tom does with his Sound Canvases and MT-32.
