CD-Versions of games like KQ5 & KQ6 have both DOS and Windows executables.  While the DOS CD executables handle music in the same way as Floppy executables (at least the result is the same), Windows handles things differently.  First off, in the older games you had to deal with using Basic or Extended Windows Midi Mappers (remember these were programmed for Windows 3.x.)  This shouldn't be a big deal because Sierra always used 9 channels for Midi and 6 channels for FM.  But do any of these games really support the MT-32?  The MT-32 isn't a General Midi device and will not respond properly unless its patch banks are programmed to conform to the General Midi patch set.  I tried KQ5 and the results with an MT-32 were very weak.  I didn't try KQ6, but as the Windows version doesn't let you choose the sound device that will receive the output, I don't think the results would be better.

KQ5 doesn't either, both are General MIDI games. KQ5's GM output is very very poor, the DOS version is better.

KQ6 is the reverse, play with DOS and a SC-55.

You can of course send the patch bank and then play with 'extended MIDI', but why play in Windows with MT-32 when the optimum game is neither.
