The "long-lost" Sierra BBS synthesizer patches...

          ...Mark Seibert didn't have them...

...Two former Sierra BBS SysOps didn't have them...

And yet...

Anders M. Olsson managed to drop a little treasure bomb into my inbox yesterday:

"Lost" Sierra Archive

Some of the unexpected highlights:

Roland D-110/10/20 driver and patch-maps for:
  • Codename: ICEMAN
  • Colonel's Bequest
  • Conquests of Camelot
  • Hoyle's Book of Games
  • King's Quest IV, V
  • Leisure Suit Larry 2, 3
  • Oils Well
  • Police Quest II
  • Quest for Glory I, II
  • Stellar 7
  • Silpheed
  • Sorcerian
  • Space Quest III

Casio CSM-1/CT-460/MT-540 driver and patch-map for Conquests of Camelot

IBM Music Feature Card/Yamaha FB-01 drivers and patch-maps for:
  • Conquests of Camelot
  • Jones in the Fast Lane
  • King's Quest V
  • Mixed-Up Mother Goose (VGA)
  • Quest for Glory II
  • Thexder 2: Firehawk

Patch-map documentation for various SCI games.

This is truly an amazing a fan-freaking-tastic collection of "lost" files, and it gives me hope that the rest might be tracked down someday.

Three cheers for Anders!

Can I predict a Roland D-110/10/20 demonstration coming along, or do the patch maps and driver merely make it sound like an MT-32?

 Grin

I haven't had a chance to give them a thorough listen, but while most of the instrumentation sounds similar, there are some significant differences. Whether they're good or bad is going to be up to you. Wink

There have been D-110 patch banks for later games as well, like for LSL5 or Robin Hood. I could not find them in the package.

Oh, and I see you will have more delightful fodder for the IBM Music Feature Card to post. Wink

YES YES YES YES!!!  Can't WAIT to hear 'em!!

The D-110 is basically the upper/digital portion of the CM-64, the CM-32P.  It's quite a bit nicer, though you can't have custom instruments (for the most part... you CAN edit the existing ones slightly.)

You do realize we'll need MP3s, don't you? Smiley

I've added a link to the archive up above.

Look for an MP3 post in the Miscellaneous MIDI section.

(Bluemax, I think you may have the D-110 confused with the U-110...) Smiley

Hi everybody,

Just wondering, will the D-110/20/10 patches work with the Roland D-5? Which is a scaled down version of the D-110/20/10 ??   Roll Eyes

PC.

They should work, and without the Part/MIDI "issue" that the D-10 and D-20 have.

The lack of reverb ought to make things sound... interesting. Smiley

Hi all!  I apologize for my extended absence, life's been busy and I've had practically no time to do any thing with my beloved synths.  So I'm hoping that this post is not too late :p

Anyway, here is a recording of the Sierra Fanfare plus the Closing Credits of King's Quest V as can be heard on the D-110.  How was it recorded?  I used the sysex loader for the files in the zip, ran the game, quit, and decided to see if the QuestStudios MIDIs would play; and they did!

  OGG Version
  MP3 Version

Kind regards,
~Andrew

PS: I'll try for Space Quest 3 tracks next, or if there are other tracks you would like me to record please let me know.

I've already done some recordings from the D-110:

Codename: Iceman
Hoyle's Book of Games Volume 1
Police Quest 2
Silpheed
Space Quest 3

Conquests of Camelot
Jones in the Fast Lane
King's Quest V
Mixed-Up Mother Goose (VGA)
Quest for Glory II
Thexder 2: Firehawk

Unfortunately, I must report that these drivers (except Conquests, and possibly Mother Goose  and Jones) will only work with a true IBM Music Feature, not with a Yamaha FB-01 module + Roland MPU-401 interface combination.

Here is a modified D-110 patch for LSL3. The timbre with the assigned fretless bass tone was driving me nuts with its whack bender range.

Sierra released post market D-110 support for several games that are not included here. I have never been able to find those:
  • ECO1D110.PAT   EcoQuest 1
  • HOY3D110.PAT   Hoyle 3
  • LB2_D110.PAT   Laura Bow II: The Dagger of Amon Ra
  • LL1_D110.PAT   Leisure Suit Larry 1 (Enhanced Version)
  • LL5_D110.PAT   Leisure Suit Larry 5
  • PQ1_D110.PAT   Police Quest 1 (Enhanced Version)
  • PQ3_D110.PAT   Police Quest 3
  • QG1_D110.PAT   Quest for Glory 1 (Enhanced Version)
  • ROBND110.PAT   Robin Hood: Conquest of the Longbow
  • SQ1_D110.PAT   Space Quest 1 (Enhanced Version)
  • SQ4_D110.PAT   Space Quest 4
  • TALED110.PAT   Mixed Up Fairy Tales

Maybe someone here has them?

Sierra released post market D-110 support for several games that are not included here.

I'm of the impression that these "patches," due to their use of GENMIDI.DRV, would have simply included the SysEx to re-map the D-110 with a GM-compatible instrument set.

Truth be told, and despite the document you're referencing, I'm not sure that these ever existed. I suppose we could try and confirm with Mark Seibert. Smiley

Now, the early SCI1 Proteus1/2 patches, on the other hand...

Those games didn't come out with a general midi driver/support.
The GM support was also added in a post-market fashion, but only to a subset of the games:
   {EcoQuest 1, Hoyle 3, LSL1 Remake, LSL5, Conquest of the Longbow, SQ1 Remake, SQ4, Mixed Up Fairy Tales}

Those GM patches and driver can be easily found on most sierra fan sites.
However the patches for the other games (Laura Bow 2, PQ1 Remake, PQ3, QfG1 Remake) are missing.

Asking Mark Seibert is a great idea. Please post his reply here (if one is given).
