I obtained an Ultrasound ACE last week, which I've had a bit of time to mess around with recently. I've discovered that somewhere, whether in the input or output chain, the L/R channels are swapped. I'd like to pretend that it was intentional - you know, somehow reasoning that reversed pinball flipper SFX are a good idea - but am convinced that Gravis simply screwed-up.

It's not a major problem, but I'd like to know (from you other two ACE owners) if it is a widespread issue. Given the PCB date-stamp, I'm fairly sure that I have an early model.

If you can point out to me a simple test with noticeable stereo positional effects, I can add my ACE's data.

Epic Pinball. Hit the left flipper, then the right.

Interesting. Thank-you for testing it!

Some games gave you the option of reversing stereo in the install routine...  does that game?

No, not this one.

I wonder if that's how Gravis resolved the issue though - by passing the problem to the developers. Wink

It worked for Creative Labs when THEY did the same thing!

Did Gravis and Creative copy Roland then?  Grin

Finally got around to testing this as I was having trouble finding where all my AT keyboards had got to.

Short story - yes, stereo is reversed in epic pinball.

Long story - I first tested this and everything was correct with the stereo channels - then I remembered I fixed (involving a new plug) my headphones a while back and must have wired them up wrong! Funny that I never noticed this before ha.

Wonder if this occurs with the GuS classic and MAX? I'll get around to testing this eventually - but if anyone has them in their system already, maybe let us know?

Well, the music appears to play correctly on my MAX - is this reversed on the ACE too?

Rhizome - could you do the flipper test and see? it's too hard to judge if the music is reversed or not just by listening (unless you can pan left and right)

At the moment my GUS MAX isn't setup (been toying with my AWE32). If it's simple for someone to get a quick sample of the menu music, I can easily compare them  Wink

The only time I would call setting up a GUS a simple job is when there is no other sound card in the system and you aren't using it to try to emulate another device.  If one of those conditions do not apply, such a setup is definitely for a journeyman hardware enthusiast.

Even that seems difficult with my MAX. I can't get it to work - at all - in Windows 95B, but it works fine under DOS  Undecided

Setting up the ACE in Windows was no easy feat either, but I somehow managed it.

OK tested with a MAX 2.1 and a classic 3.74 - both have normal stereo. Only the ACE is reversed.

I haven't seen any revisions other than 1.0 for the ACE - I'm not sure any exist that have the correct stereo channels (unless gravis did repairs on request).

A v1.1 ACE does exist - a photograph of which can be seen at gravisultrasound.net.

<conspiracy>I find it interesting that the ACE stereo-reversal phenomenon isn't mentioned elsewhere on the web, Usenet or otherwise...</conspiracy>
