Ok so i finished building my old P3, here are the quick stats:

p3
733 mhz
128 mb ram
viper agp card, 16mb
cdrom
sound blaster audigy
windows98se

ive been reading up on all the sound capabilities. but my main concern was this... its not a problem to have one sound card (pci) configured to run all windows based stuff, and another sound card (isa) for all the older dos games? im new to these isa slot things, when i had this computer in 1999, i didnt know what that slot was, never heard of anyone using them...

and i wonder this becuase dos likes the isa slots more than pci im assuming...  i tried all these programs/configurations/command line stuff/ but nothing is working really that well... dos box works for the kings quest games so far that i tired, but i just installed rise of the triad and only sound effects play, no music.  same for doom2, sound effects but no music... and when i restart in msdos mode... i get no music or sound at all.... so will getting an isa sound card, and using it just for these types of dos games solve all of this?

What PCI card are you using? It probably lacks a MIDI synth completely, meaning it would have to rely on another card or external module or (lord forbid) Microsoft's SoftSynth.

EDIT: DUH, 6 hours sleep, getting up early and not being able to read a post correctly?! *bangs head on the wall*

Right, if you're trying to use the Audigy in DOS, it's MIDI synth will not work at all, as Creative gave it no support under DOS.

There is a SB Live DOS driver that was altered to work with the Audigy 1. They say it also works with the Audigy 2 but it doesn't. I've tried it. I don't know how well it works for the Audigy 1, though.

EDIT: I guess it isn't really altered, but the Audigy has the same stuff on the card that makes SB16 emulation work on the SBLive, I just think it was that it didn't come with the driver.

I'm sure Win98 has a driver for it.

SoundBlaster 16 does indeed have a Win98 driver. I remember using my AWE32 in 98, and that uses the SB16 driver for digital audio (I think anyway).

ok so ive got the sb16 ct1740 installed now... some games are fine and know that the card is there, and runs fine (blake stone, kings quest V, etc...)  others cant find the card  such as Rise of the Triad, and some music programs (trackers)  and im running all these in real dos..

ive been looking everywhere for dos drivers and win98 drivers too, why not... heh   but came up with nothing.. i found some and installed but did not work.. those mentioned games/programs say sb16 not detected...

rhizome, do you remember where you got the drivers from??
