This might sound totally noob but my knowledge about pre 1990's sound hardware is pretty slim...
I have recently started playing games from the late's 80's and early 90's which mostly support Adlib or early soundblaster's or the CMS sound which seem to be hardcoded to IRQ7
The question is...which of the above sound hardware is prefered in these games? my SB 2.0 has the CMS chips

I wouldn't know to tell you which is better, since they're both kinda' crappy...
Nah, I'm kidding of course, since both have they're moments.

Anyway, for some comparison, I would suggest you check out these links:
CMS Game Blaster demonstration
Adlib Gold MP3 Demonstration of Dune soundtrack (better than Adlib)
Crossfire Designs sound card demonstration
and just for some kicks:
Vibrants, EdLib, and the mighty OPL-2

Neither the CMS or Adlib music chips require an IRQ, only the digital and midi interface capabilities of the Sound Blaster do.

Many more games support Adlib than CMS music.  In games that support both, CMS support is usually an afterthought.

You have a rare board in that SB 2.0, few were ever upgraded with the CMS chips and the upgrade requires a custom PAL chip to work.

Boy this takes me back!  I remember the SoundBlaster 1.0 with CMS chips, and many salesmen preferred to run game demos in CMS instead of Adlib.  Why???

"Because it's STEREO!"

I bought this SB2.0 boxed some months ago on Ebay but didn't start using it until recently when I built a 386 gaming rig...back then I didn't know about these CMS chips so it was kind of a suprise too see them on the card Shocked
