What do you all think of Wing Commander Privateer?

Not as good as WC I & WC II. (Game play wise, not graphic wise)

Wing Commander I is still the best! As you will get promoted as you play...  Cheesy

I certainly will miss Spirit Tanaka...  Tongue

I liked Wing Commanders I, II, III, IV better, but I still liked Privateer too. The music was very good - one of the best GM scores I can think of, and game play was fun, if somewhat generic and repetitive.

I like Wing Commander I best, but that has to do with the fact that it was the first game I played after I got my first real sound card for the PC for my birthday (an original AdLib, wish I still had it...) and together with the EMS memory card (ISA, forgot how many MB's though) in the PC the game played very well and sounded great. Brings back good memories. Smiley

Privateer is one of my favourite classic games!

And yeah I really like the music score as well Smiley  I actually ripped the XMI midi files from the game and wrote my own program to play & convert them. The existing midis from Privateer floating around the net have the timing all wrong (XMI2MID is an evil program) and play too fast or too slow.  I could post the midis if anyone wants them.

Yeah the gameplay was a little repetitive, but the freedom to follow or ignore the plot as you pleased and to buy upgrades for your ship kept me entertaned for ages Smiley

I'd really appreciate it if you could post these midis, or email them to me, if it's more convenient.

Now there's a well-deserved server hack if there ever was one.

I've included both the XMI files as well as my MID conversions

Haha, yes. They've nicked some of my MIDIs too. Sad

Where's retro2.mid from? I ripped these MIDIs a few years ago for the Privateer Remake project, but I didn't find that one in the MIDI resource file.

Ooooo... Privateer remake?  Smiley

Best part about that game was the ship upgrading...  I still remember the frustration going to Shields2 while still at Engines1, not realizing that engines were for power, not speed.  Smiley

But nothing beats WC1...  I loved the medal ceremonies!  When playing late at night, I would catch myself saluting along with the onscreen characters.  Smiley
The Adlib soundtrack was pretty darned good too!  Mind you, I got my CM-64 about halfway through.  Smiley

The Privateer remake has been around for several years. There are 3 different versions (at least) that I know of:
Privateer ASCII sector - the name says it all - Privateer for hardware challenged computers.  Wink
Privateer - Gemini Gold - Featuring an all new graphics engine, but other than that, as faithful as possible to the original version
and
Privateer Remake - which took a few liberties over the original game, especailly with the interface, along with the all new graphics engine.

Just take your pick.  Smiley

I meant in which resource file, not where it's played in-game. If it is in the same file as the others, I must have missed it. :O

Well, ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI.
That's awesome...  I could imagine playing that or the old text-based "Dungeon Hack" at work...  "Oh this?  I'm just shifting these data packets around...  see, that text character "@" represents my placement within the network....    Cheesy

I'm pretty sure it's BASETUNE.GEN bit it's been a while since I was poking around in the privateer data files.

All are still working projects, but they're extremely playable. The graphics engine used in 'Gemini Gold' and 'Privateer Remake' are open source, and look amazing. You should try it!

Aw crud....  my P4-2.6HT with GF4MX is just too dog slow, even at low-quality 800x600.

My 386 ran it just fine...  Sad  Wonder if I can find the DOS version for good ol' DOSBOX?

Which one, the ASCII version?  Tongue

I seem to remember the remake worked fine on my P4 3.0HT... Maybe there are other parameters you can play with (number of objects, polygons etc.)
