With this post I’d like to “resurrect” the old discussion about the comparison, in terms of sound quality, between the Roland CM-32P (or the PCM part of the CM-64) and the SC-55.
I’ve always thought that at least some of the CM-32P patches were better than its SC-55 counterparts, especially those found in the SN-U110 expansion cards. After a quite long process, I’ve finally managed to get the full collection of SN-U110 cards (15 in total), so I’ve been able to do a proper comparison. Here there are all the cards in all their glory

:

As you probably know, the CM-32P is a cut-down version of the U-110, one of the very first fully PCM based synths from Roland. The synthesis engine of the U-series is very simple and “primitive” (we’re talking about PCM technology of the 80s), so they are more like sample players instead of “real” synthesizers. Virtually the only parameters than can be edited are the frequency of the oscillators (pitch) and the amplitude and the envelope generator of the amplifier. There’s no filter at all. Nonetheless, the specs were quite good at the time: 31-voice polyphony (up to two elements per patch), 6-part multitimbral and effects processor. The synthesis engine of the Sound Canvas is a bit better (filters), and it has a lot more patches, but there are on the other hand some drawbacks, such as less polyphony and the inability to select the oscillator waveform for creating patches (although you cannot do it either in the CM-32P or the CM-64; only in the U-series).
The point is that I think that the CM-32P can sound better than the SC-55 because at least some of the PCM samples are of a higher quality. That’s especially true in the case of the expansion cards. Some of the sounds found on these cards rival the quality of many more modern synthesizers. This makes the CM-32P an interesting tool for music creation. But in order to let everyone to listen and judge by himself, I’ve made some recordings. Here you’ll find some phrases using equivalent or comparable patches, both performed by a CM-32P (actually, a CM-64), and a SC-55 (actually, a SC-88 using the SC-55 soundmap, as I currently don’t have any SC-55 or 100% compatible. Maybe there could be some slight differences in sound between the SC-55 soundmap of the SC-88 and the real SC-55, but I suspect that, even if they exist, that would mean that the SC-88 sounds better, due to its higher quality 18-bit DACs and audio signal output).
I’ve selected virtually all the patches which are “equivalent” among the CM-32P (either internal presets or expansion cards) and the SC-55. There are many GM patches which have no counterpart in the CM-32P even with the cards, but to be fair there are also many other patches in the SN-U110 cards with no equivalent in the SC-55 soundmap. All the phrases are performed by me, so don’t expect great playing skills. They were all recorded using my M-Audio Audiophile Delta 192, and MP3 encoded at 320 kbps. Reverb settings were the default ones. For even further comparison, I’ve also recorded the same phrases using a basic XG module (the MU-50).
