Use Your Machine's Extra Memory

Sierra's SCI1 and 2 games had this entry in the Install program to use the extra memory in the machine. It would give the amount of EMS and XMS RAM available. But I have some questions:
1. What good would the extra RAM do? Speed up loading times? Animation and scrolling (i.e. double buffering)?
2. Could an early game that did not come with the driver in its installer, like QG2 or KQ5, use it if copied over from a later installer?

2. I never did that specific example but I did manually edit the resource.cfg file on a couple of games. I think that there may be a few cases where it is possible to mix driver files from different games. For example, on Al Lowe's website he recommends downloading a certain driver to fix sound issues on many of his games.
