Many DOS Games that had music composed for the MT-32/LAPC-I/CM-32L will not work without a Roland MPU-401 Midi Processing Interface card in the system.

I hope that clears things up.

I just got a Roland S-MPU-IIAT. This is an ISA card, but it says it is PnP, and no jumpers. Comes with a MIDI connector box. But unlike original MPU401 this one has no waveblaster connector for a daughterboard cards. On the box it says it is "intelligent MIDI unit".

Is ithis the one that I need?

I've heard from people (but not tried myself) that the S-MPU cards from Roland do have some issues when it comes to mpu-401 intelligent mode. Problem-free interfaces from Roland are , of course, the MPU-401 and the MPU-IPC-T ISA cards.

Does MPU-401 need drivers? Or games directly access to it?
My S-MPU I think will not work without drivers.

I can't tell for sure for the S-MPU (II), but with the MPU-401 and MPU-IPC-T in plain DOS neither needed any drivers to function correctly in all games I've played. I assume the S-MPU (II) won't need drivers either.

S-MPU will not work without drivers because it's PnP, I think. The resources (IRQ and DMA) are given by the driver. The are no jumpers to set it up.
The board that I got lools like it was never used, just ones for testing Wink Box is in a perfect condition. Manual, FD with drivers... like new.

I've just read that GUS ACE has an Intelligent MPU-401 mode. Has it?

The GUS ACE doesn't have a joystick/midi interface at all. Smiley

I didn't think the GUS ACE was the best choice, either. Why don't you try the S-MPU that you bought?

I am using a Super MPU-II that I've got. But if GUS would work as a MPU it could save an ISA slot for me Smiley
is there a list of games that need Intelligent mode so I can test them and put the results here?

I think early Sierra SCI games need intelligent mode. PQ2, LSL2, KQ4 for sure.

Well, I've just played PQ2 and KQ4 and it WORKS!  Smiley
There are two drivers on the floppy disk: Win95 and Win3.11. What I did was just simply installed Win3.11 drivers under MS-DOS: "a:\win31\SMPUENA I". The utility asked me about resources to chose. After that it added following to autoexec.bat:
C:\SMPU2\SMPUENA.EXE -p330 -i3

If you can give me some more game titles to test, would be nice  Smiley

You can try David Wolf Secret Agent. Can't give you more titles, I only tried most games with an interface supporting intelligent mode.

The IRQ should be set to IRQ 2 though, that's the default setting for games.
