Hi Everyone,

Newbie alert Wink

I've been reading this forum extensively for the past few weeks and I have a question. I'm in the process of assembling a dos gaming pc. I was going to use the old 486 DX2 but it seems that it doesn't work anymore. So, I dug up the AMD K7 which has 2 ISA slots. I'm going to use this one until I find out what's wrong with the 486.

For midi audio I bought a CM-32L and CM-300 from Yahoo Auctions Japan for 2440yen, and I got a MPU-IPC-T for 15 euro (ISA card + breakout box). So I guess I'm set for the midi part.

Of course I also need FM and digital sound for some games, so I took the Sound Blaster 16 ASP/MCD (CT2230) from my old 486. Yesterday I was dumping some stuff at the junk/recycling yard and went to take a look at the electronics space. I've brought two Sound Blasters from old pc's with me, a CT2910 (SB16) and a CT4180 (Vibra16).

From what I've read on this forum the quality of the OPL3 chip together with the other chips in one package (like the Vibra16) is crap, right? Plus the Vibra16 is PnP, which is what I'm trying to avoid.
So that leaves the CT2230 and CT2910, one has the Creative CT1747 and the other a Yamaha YMF-289B, which should be a OPL3-L according to a datasheet I found.
What is the difference between the OPL3 and OPL3-L? Which is better?
Also, is there a quality difference between a real Yamaha YMF-262 and the Creative CT1747 variation?

I guess that's it for now... Smiley

Okay, I've done some tests with my CT2230 and CT2910. The CT2910 is noisier than CT2230, but on the other side it also sounds a little cleaner than the CT2230.

I've also looked up a little more information on the Vibra chips and apparently there are 2 versions (2501 and 2504) which use a real Yamaha OPL3, so I have to change my mind about them all being crap. The only positive side before was the better SNR but after the discovery of the real OPL3 I'm definitely going to look out for a card with one of these two Vibra revisions.

Apparently the YMF-289B is just a low voltage version of the YMF-262 which should be about the same quality wise.
