Hi there! I haven't been here in quite a while Sad but I always remember here as being the only active forum for the 8850, so here goes!

I like to play my MIDI through the 8850, but frequently have to reset the machine due to a lot (most?) of MIDI files not resetting at the beginning. Obviously, I can do this by hand, but I'm about to relocate the machine out of arms reach (freeing up space on the floor so I can walk instead of treading on cables!) so I was wondering if there's a MIDI file that can perform a full reset on the device. I've seen ones that do GM only, but a full would be just dandy. Can anyone help?

Thanks muchly!!

I haven't looked into this yet, but I know what you mean.  There are lots of MIDIs out there that take advantage of the SC-88, SC-88pro, and even the 8850.  It's frustrating when most MIDIs don't have a reset command.  I believe that you could transmit sysex to your module via WSYSEX found here at Queststudios.  Check out the MT-32 resource center and download the MIDIEX link I think.  Check your manual and write the sysex code that does an all init, or whatever you need to get reset.  Smiley  Hope this helps.

I mainly listen to game music. I've got an SC-55 MKII and three modules with the earlier SC-55 board. Does it make sense to get a better device such as this one - to listen to GM music?

I would say that if you want to strictly listen to GM, an SC-88 would be a good choice.  Not a lot of MIDIs are written for the 88pros and up.  Though there are a few out there.  You really can't tell unless you try to listen to one.  For some reason, most MIDI authors don't say what device they used to compose the file, which is annoying if you have a lower end module, but is a pleasant surprise if you have a higher end module (go figure).  The 8850 is expensive and even more so when you only use it as a listening device.  Don't get me wrong - I love Tom's ED collection, but he has MP3s of it too!  But if you do get an 8850, you'll never be wanting a better GS device, and there won't be a GS file you can't play.  It's a great device, and I love it.  For me, I knew I had to have it.  It wasn't a matter of if I'd get it but when.  The greatest thing about the 8850 is that there isn't an upgrade path - that's it.  Blow your money once and be done with it. If you're disappointed, you can likely make your money back.

I find a simple GS Reset midi file works fine for my 8850.

I put one up on my website here:  http://www.midimusicadventures.com/2011/05/gs-reset/

Andrew, you wouldn't happen to have a Cubase script file for the SC-8850, or know where I can get one?  I'm afraid I'll have to make my own (the SC-88pro one is HORRIBLE!).

I have an old .INS instrument definition file for the old cakewalk software.  Not sure if that is compatible.  I have never used Cubase. I do most of my stuff with FL Studio these days..  I am not at my pc right now.  Trying out the forums on my new phone. (Verizon HTC Thunderbolt).

If you search for. Roland SC-8850 cakewalk definitions you should find it.  But, again not sure if that is helpful to you, or what you are asking for.  If it is and you still can't find it.  Let me know and I will upload what I have.

It's not what I was looking for, but I do have Cakewalk Sonar that came with my keyboard controller.  Thanks for responding though.  I started making my own script file, and it's gonna take forever to say the least.  But it's alright I guess, because the default SC-88pro stuff is terrible.  It groups them all by capitol tones and variation tones as well, which makes sense up to a point.  But it's just called "group 1, group 2," etc.  I'm going to rewrite my own patch script and organize it into instrument categories, and I'll preview every patch I do so I can pick which ones sound good and noteworthy.  Cheesy
