This new build sounds promising:

Tunes that were way off before now sound pretty good! I'm very excited!

To get mt32emu_2011_04_13.zip to work under Win 7 64-bit:

Copy MT-32 and CM-32L rom files to System32 folder.

Install Midi Yoke. Set Windows midi out to Midi Yoke port 1. Start mt32emu.exe. Set Midi In Port 0.

Start DOSBOX. It should work now.

It's not completely accurate yet, but I find it a major improvement. It now actually sounds good enough to use it IMHO.

I am having great trouble installing the driver under Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) --- even though the installation seems to finish, even after rebooting, the emulator does not appear in the list of MIDI devices, and in the device manager it says "The drivers for this device are not installed" (Code 28). Someone else apparently has this problem as well, and no one has replied. Hence, I could not try this latest version.

I have tried however the DosBox SVN build with the April 5th MUNT update, which already sounds impressive to my ears. While it has problems with some games (the lasers in Wing Commander 1 are far too quiet), it is indeed usable with most games. And maybe some of those remaining problems have already been fixed in the April 13th version of the Windows driver. At this point, the reverb is probably the first thing that gives the emulation away, more so than any faults in the synthesis emulation.

I was only able to get mt32emu.exe to work, but that does work under both Windows 7 64-bit and XP 32-bit.

My instructions are for that version. You will need Midi Yoke or something similar installed to get it to work.

You don't need the driver for mt32emu.exe to work.

If mt32emu.exe gives you error messages, it's because the ROM files are not in the system32 folder. The MT-32 ROM files are probably enough, but if the CM-32L ROM files are present, the extra sound effects are heard properly in emulation.

I believe this works quite better than what's heard in the Ykhwong DOSBox build, sounds fine in most games (some still have problems.)

One instrument doesn't come out right in the Death Track menu music and the start of the Police Quest 2 intro music is also a bit wrong, but even these tunes are more close to the original compared to the April 4th Ykhwong build.

After some tribulations getting Midi Yoke to work, I now manage to use mt32emu.exe with the regular DosBox build. Indeed, it now sounds even better than with the DosBox SVN build. Although I can make out a few mistakes, overall, the result is very convincing, expect for the reverb. Smiley

I hope they will continue to perfect it still. From my observations with other aspects of emulation, once it is 95% complete, the authors tend to lose interest.

I used Yhkwong's April 5 SVN build and I was pleasantly surprised with the result.  It was not so easy to tell the difference between the real thing and the emulation.  Years ago, before Munt was ressurected, the sound accuracy left a great deal to be desired.  Back then it was probably about 50% of the way, now it is in the 90 percent range.  I would not be so lacking in confidence to predict that my CM-32L may be on the auction block soon.  The industrial white box never did anything for me aesthetically.  Unless they come up with a way to emulate the display, the MT-32 will stay put for now.

This sounds fairly accurate now, especially the April 13th build, I will be using it from now on, but I'll keep my modules just the same.
