Once I first played this game, Gabriel's theme, which plays with certain variations in many parts of the game, seemed oddly familiar.  Today, I played it again and knew that I heard something very close to the main melody before.  In the movie Goodfellas, there is a scene towards the end where several bodies are being shown in a montage.  And the music playing during the sequence is very close, note and rhythm wise, to Gabriel's theme.  Since my knowledge of contemporary music is rather limited, I used IMDB to help me figure out the title of the music.  Turns out it is the second part of Layla (the Piano Exit) by Eric Clapton.  The note sequence between the two is very similar, although it recurs to a greater extent in composer Robert Holmes' music for GK.  If my father was alive, he would have known it instantly, since guitar playing and classic rock were among his passions and he was well acquainted with Clapton's work.  I myself had heard both parts Layla before, but never together and did not know that Clapton was the artist or even that the name of the song was "Layla".

Yeah - they are indeed quite similar!
Here's a link for the interested (it links to the point in the song you refer) :

(I'm not using a url tag because it ignores the time tag after the hash symbol)

BTW - are you aware of the similarity between Police Quest 3's intro and the song "Downfall" by the metal band Children of Bodom?

It's rather obvious for anyone who played PQ3:
Children of Bodom - Downfall

OMG Jan Hammer's PQ3 theme isn't original!

At least Mark Seibert bothered to come up with his own original theme.

PQ2 > PQ3!!!!!1!

Just kidding guys. Carry on.
