This has probably been asked about before, but the old messages are apparently not available for search on this spiffy new host. What is "intelligent mode"? Is it ever used in games? Is it even possible to use it via a software emulated MPU-401 interface (like SoundFX 2000)?
Also, is there some issue about the MT-32 supporting intelligent mode but not its clones like the CM-32L?

Check this link. It doesn't say much about what intelligent mode actually is, so if you're looking for something a little more technical, try this.

Going a bit off topic here, but I should really change the color of the link a bit. It's a bit too dark and almost hidden.

This topic is fine where it is.
I've AWE32 and MPU-IPC-T both installed in MSDOS. I can't get intelligent mode running (PM1 & PM2). Please help.

Also, is there some issue about the MT-32 supporting intelligent mode but not its clones like the CM-32L? No - intelligent mode is one of the two ways (the other being UART) the MIDI interface (eg. the MPU-401) can communicate with the host machine or program. It is perhaps best illustrated in this crude fashion: Program <- intelligent or UART mode -> MPU-401 card <- MIDI -> MT-32
So in effect, the MT-32 doesn't know anything about intelligent mode, it just knows "MIDI" (which is good, 'cause it's the only thing coming out of the MPU-401's MIDI ports ). Same goes for CM-32L, et. al.

DOSBox emulator emulates intelligent mode of mpu-401. It also works with Princess Maker 2. I am not sure whether i have checked Princess Maker 1. loh: you can check PM1 with dosbox and say whether it works or not

Intelligent mode does not work in DOS and DOSBOX 0.63 under W95. Is there anyway I could make it work?? UART works so I know sound module, cables and MPU are working. I doubt the breakout box and/or AWE32 configuration has something to do with this.

OK, I've had enough of this nonsence. Intelligent mode does not work in DOS and DOSBOX 0.63 under W95. Is there anyway I could make it work??
I don't know if this is a language issue or not, but you could try and be a little nicer to people who are trying to help you out.

Intelligent mode is enabled by default on Roland MPU devices. Power-on your computer without doing anything else, and you're in intelligent mode. Boom.
They have to receive a command to enter UART mode, which is generally software-driven.

Ari I'm terribly sorry for the language anyway it may offend anyone reading it. I will not comment such in the future, guess my heart is still young. Robotmo: The problem was IRQ assignment, MPU is good now. I believe PM1 & PM2 run at 9. Strangly my display adaptor is on 11, but AWE32 isn't affected anyway. ** The CVS works (PM1 intelligent mode). PM2 crushes on 0.63 (CVS too) Cloudschatze: Yes, you're right.

I had a feeling it was because of language differences. No problem.

I have just checked my Princess Maker 2 and it works with intelligent mode in DOSBox CVS. But I don't have the original CD of the game so I guess it is your CD that makes problems. Have you mounted the CD properly in DOSbox? (type intro cdrom in dosbox).

Have you mounted the CD properly in DOSbox? (type intro cdrom in dosbox). I'm not sure weather I should continue the discussion over my games unable to run in DOSBOX because the IRQ issue is managed and my MPU is proven working in intelligent mode. On top of the CD thing; PM1 & PM2 (K J C floppy versions, English beta isn't offically released) all work fine in MSDOS and they all require intelligent mode to hear MIDI. Later www.kingformation.com.tw (where I buy all my PM games) released many many more that intelligent mode is no longer needed for MIDI, guess the issue isn't CD-ROM itself. DOSBox 0.63 crushes running my PM2 could be a combimation of W95 configuration or video incompatibility. (DOSBox may not support the video chip, I'm using a rare Nvidia multimedia accelerator adaptor using 2 ST Micro. DSP) Thank you so much for the tips, I will respond in another thread.
