QUEST STUDIOS INFORMATION AND SUPPORT / Support / KQ2+ songlist error
|
on: September 24, 2011, 08:47:57 PM
|
Minor, minor error here... sorry to even bring it up... A few months ago, I used NavyNuke's JukeBox program and your King's Quest II+ VGA Songlist page to make a complete soundtrack: http://www.queststudios.com/quest/kq2rts/kq2music/kq2songlist.htmlOne of the tracks, Track 71, has the corresponding song listed as MUSIC807. However, that track is much too jaunty and happy for the "Wolf Pack Encounter", and after watching Paw Dugan's recent playthrough of KQ2+, it doesn't match the music that plays during the sequence (assuming that is the "Wolf Pack Encounter" in question). The music that plays while the two wolves run pass Graham after he leaves the Church ("Wolf Pack Encounter", Track 71) should be MUSIC039. It turns out both tracks (MUSIC039 and MUSIC807) are each about 7 seconds long, so this is likely the cause of the mix-up. Thanks, Tom!

GENERAL DISCUSSION / Everything Sierra / Re: Much belated thanks -- Enjoyed KQ2VGA soundtrack

Tom -- Just finished AGDI's KQ3-Redux and IA's KQ3-VGA over the last few weeks and thoroughly enjoyed the soundtracks from both. It got me thinking about the progress of the updated KQ2-VGA soundtrack mentioned above. Has it been abandoned for the time being? Or are you waiting until next year to release the 10th Anniversary Edition of the soundtrack? Thanks. Gary

GENERAL DISCUSSION / Everything Sierra / Re: Sierra games on Win 3.1 / 3.11 ?

I had thought everybody lurking here had an MT-32 in their possession! Oh well, there nice emulation for most everything, expect for the MT-32 (and its compatible brothers).
Yes, even though I was a big fan of music from the Sierra games, a nice sound card (Adlib/Roland/etc) was the one thing I never bought back in the day... That's why I was so happy to discover Quest Studios and Sierra Music Central years ago: to hear how Sierra games would have sounded had I had one of those cards (of course, with the understanding that everyone who records such music often puts their own little flourishes in as well).

It's as I suspected. Since I don't have a nice sound card (Adlib/Roland/etc), there's no really need to install any other Sierra game in Win 3.x other than KQ6 (for the character portraits).
Many thanks to everyone who contributed here, especially you, MI. I knew you'd be able to speak from experience...

GENERAL DISCUSSION / Everything Sierra / Sierra games on Win 3.1 / 3.11 ?

Finally got around to getting Win 3.1 working for DOSBox (with sound(!)), so I am looking for a little guidance/advice:
For quite some time, I've had the DOS "Quest" games already installed (King's, Quest For & Space) as well as the Larry games, Freddy Pharkas, and a few others. However, there may be a few perks/upgrades for the Windows 3.1/3.11 editions that are missing from the DOS versions.
Seeing as how I never played Sierra games on the Windows 3.1/3.11 platform back in the day, I'm not certain if I'm missing out on anything.
Aside from King's Quest 6, which Sierra games should I install specifically for Windows 3.1/3.11?
Thanks!

MUSIC & SOUND CARDS / Digital Audio / Re: Freeware WAV editor -- any recommendations?

Thank you for the suggestion. I really appreciate the help everyone gives us audio "novices" here on the forums. I had heard of Audacity a while back, but having no need for it at the time, I promptly forgot about it. Coming so highly recommended, I will certainly try out this weekend! Thanks again.

GENERAL COMPUTER DISCUSSION / Computer Hardware/Software Q&A / Re: Old 486 CMOS Battery Low

Sorry to hear about that, MI. I had a similar problem a year-and-a-half ago with my Pentium 166. After 13 years with no problems whatsoever, the built-in CMOS battery finally died. It would start fine in Win98 Safe Mode using the BIOS defaults, but got hung up when loading the Windows drivers in "normal mode". However, I couldn't find the battery anywhere(!). After much seraching, I discovered that I had an NVRAM battery, which looks like an IC/microchip. From a tutorial by Gabriel Torres on "Replacing the Motherboard Battery" at hardwaresecrets.com: "The NVRAM battery is a little black box that contains the clock circuit and a small lithium battery... ...The NVRAM may be directly soldered to the motherboard instead of being held on to it through a socket. In this case, you will have of de-solder the old circuit and solder the new one. That task is only recommended for people who really have experience de-soldering and soldering electronic components." Ugh. That was exactly the case. I was able to DL the HD, and bought another Pentium computer... This time, one with an easily replaceable CR2032 battery!

I have really been enjoying listening to your latest version, shad0wfax. It's really terrific work here, and would love to hear other scores (like from QFG and SQ) similarly revisited!
I know the previous versions were tagged as "Fantom XR", but since you used a lot of different hardware for version 3, do you have a generic tag for these?
Or should I just label my folder as "LSL3 shad0wfax"?

MalwareBytes is another great anti-malware program...
The free version is passive (whereas $$$ version is active), but it gets rid of the viruses/trojans/malware at home and on our systems at work.
Running a scan once a week or so does the trick for me.

Greetings, Marten!
I analyzed the files using MP3Val, as you suggested. All thirteen tracks had the same problem, which are summarized below [ X = CD#, either 1 or 2 ; YY = Track # ; ZZZZ = # of MPEG frames ]:
************************************************** Analyzing file "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3"... WARNING: "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3" (offset 0x0): Garbage at the beginning of the file WARNING: "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3": VBR detected, but no VBR header is present. Seeking may not work properly. WARNING: "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3": No supported tags in the file INFO: "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3": ZZZZ MPEG frames (MPEG 1 Layer III), no tags, no VBR header, CRC **************************************************
All files were able to be rebuilt:
************************************************** Analyzing file "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3"... WARNING: "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3" (offset 0x0): Garbage at the beginning of the file WARNING: "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3": VBR detected, but no VBR header is present. Seeking may not work properly. FIXED: "C:\...\SOR_CDX_TrackYY.mp3": File was rebuilt Done! **************************************************
All thirteen rebuilt files are now working with Windows Media Player 9 Series. I have not tested them on WMP11, but in light of the success with WMP9, I have no reason to believe that they won't work with WMP11, either.
What a terrific program! Thanks for the help, and hopefully you will be able to rebuild the questionable Sorcerian files on Tom and Dianne's server(s).
Thanks again, Marten!
