361  MUSIC & SOUND CARDS / Roland MT-32 Sound Module / downloading sysex data on: June 27, 2004, 08:54:20 AM
Device ID and Model ID are the same as for the MT-32. You don't need to worry about those since they're already part fo the SysEx, however.

Can you see any activity on the CM-32L's activity LED when you send the SysEx file? If not, then the problem is the connection. Check that the MIDI mapper is using your MIDI port as output.

There's a SysEx transfer utility for Windows called WSysEx. It's not pretty, but it gets the job done. I'm fairly certain it's available from Tom's "MT-32 Resource Center" (in the same zip as the "dump" utility for DOS). You can also find it here:

http://www.harmony-central.com/Software/Windows/wsysex.html

In general, anything capable of sending SysEx will do (even Media Player - although it would need to be embedded in a MIDI file of course). The CM-32L isn't picky or prone to buffer overflows like the MT-32 so you don't have to choose a program that will send SysEx messages with pauses to slow down the transfer.

(Referring to the question "So, regardless of what MT-32 game I play, the emulator can handle all the custom instruments?"):

You should keep in mind that custom patches are no different from the normal or default instruments. They're just not in the ROM. There are no special properties tied ot the custom instruments.

The emulator is not just wavetable translation. It emulates the LA synthesis the MT-32 did. It emulates the patch ram in the same configuration.

This is really the essential point. Handling SysEx and custom patches comes almost automatically due to the way the emulator is designed. It's either everything or nothing.

Well, this is interesting, to say the least. What do you guys think?

I think I'm overall fairly uninterested rather than sceptical Wink

Why would I need an emulator when I have the real thing? With an emulator, there'll always be the nagging suspicion (to me anyway) that the output isn't 100% accurate. I don't need to question my CM-32L or MT-32.

This is why I don't like emulated sound formats in general - although I see them as a necessity when I don't own the original hardware and in some cases they offer greater flexibility.

The hiss can be a result of a soundcard or driver that doesn't really handle 48KHz. I've noticed it in particular with old SB-16 cards, where 48KHz files play, but with a very noticable hiss.

More recent cards should be fine, though...

The MT-32? The difference is only 32 sound effects.

I wonder if later model MT-32s (the ones with the headphone socket) have those...

Come to think of it, I'd like to mention something a bit more obscure - "Bi-Fi 2: Action in Hollywood", which was a freeware promotional game for some kind of German snack. It's a point and click adventure game set in a movie studio with nice VGA graphics and a humorous story line. I got stuck and never completed it, unfortunately. I guess my German (it's not available in English as far as I know) reading skills weren't up to the task.

I believe it is available for PC and Amiga and is freeware.

Oh yes! Gateway (based on a book by Frederich Pohl) deserves mention too.

Make sure you get the polarity right! I'm sure wrong polarity is a lot more harmful than the proper adapter running slightly above spec.
