Glad you got one!

Unfortunately shipping costs from Australia are outrageous and make selling overseas simply not feasible

Hi there Smiley

I must say it's been very quiet on here the last few years. But make sure you dig through the archive, it's a gold mine in regards to knowledge. You can spend months going over old posts and it must have been a very exciting time back in those days.

With decent emulation available, do you think the price of the real modules will be affected? Of course, an MT-32 isn't that hard to get. CM modules are more scarce.

I believe the opposite will happen: it will push prices up even further.

MUNT will allow more people to experience how Roland sounded, which in turn will make some wanting to have the real thing. Tons of old hardware has been emulated very well, but real hardware keeps getting more expensive.

It's because it's not about the accuracy, but the emotional attachment and unique experience real hardware gives you.

I made two comparisons between a MT-32 (Old) and Munt 1.1.1.

Now I'm not an audiophile, but I would describe the difference as MUNT sounding cleaner, no noise and less bright. The MT-32 (Old) sounds brighter, more noise, warmer and less "artificial".

Still, it's a fantastic achievement, no doubt...
9  MUSIC & SOUND CARDS / Roland MT-32 Sound Module / Re: MUNT back in active development on: January 14, 2013, 07:12:08 AM
What I found is that with the CM-32L rom files you will hear the 33 extra sound effects. Also certain games, like games from Dynamix, will reproduce the exact some "bugs" as the real CM-32L. With the MT-32 roms you don't get the 33 extra sound effects and Sierra/Dynamix games sound much closer to the original.

I haven't done further testing beyond a few games, but this is what I observed so far. It's definitely at a very high level and I'm looking forward to what the future brings. Still, IMO only the real hardware gives you the "peace of mind" that everything sounds like it should. E.g. some games, like Prince of Persia, you might wonder if it's just bad composing or the emulator playing up Smiley

Thanks guys Smiley

Subtitles are indeed a lot of work, especially as I didn't use a script. But you can always post questions in the comments. I, or someone else, will definitely answer them!

For the next video, if I ever do a long one like this one, I will split up again. I just learnt how to put links in YT videos and things like that.

My aim was definitely to make the topic of MT-32 more accessible to people who might be put-off by not knowing what to get, how to get it going and general confusion. I also find that similar questions get asked again and again in forums, so now I can just link my video Smiley

I love your enthusiasm. Good job!

Thank you!

FWIW: I think you should split this up into smaller videos. People on the youtubez are used to short segments.

It was something I thought hard about. In a previous video I did (
Ultimate GOG.com DOSBox Tutorial Part 1 Installing your Games
a 2 hour long tutorial showing how to tweak DOSBox games from GOG.com), I found that people didn't use the playlist. They watched the first video and the other videos deeper into the playlist got very few views.

But yes I totally hear you, but in the end I just wanted to get it DONE as it was taking over my life Cheesy

People on mobile devices and tablets will have a hard time finding your table of contents. Those on PCs will rarely bother to expand the description section. Fewer will bother to click on the jump links provided. Instead use annotations inside your videos to let people know where they can jump to. You can also refer them to the written TOC or a playlist. Spend some time creating video bumpers. Do an intro so to brand your tutorials with a nice logo. Another at the end of every video with clickable clips to other video questions. Many clips will have the secondary effect of populating the recommended tile section at the end of every video with more of your Q&As. That way you'll retain more of your audience and add more value to your project. Also consider adding a wallpaper to your channel. Look here for examples:

Hi all!

I'm making good progress on my MT-32 documentation.

Just in the process of covering the clipping issue on the CM series of units. So far I only have Wing Commander (fireworks) as an example.

Is anyone aware of other games that will clip on LAPC-I and CM series of Roland MIDI units?

I found a YT video about Laura Bow 1 and he had clipping and mentioned it, but I couldn't replicate the issue (didn't clip at all on my CM units).

So I'd love to have more examples.

Also if you can help out with the clicking issue (as per previous post) that would be fantastic. Basically looking for a game that is affected by this issue.
14  MUSIC & SOUND CARDS / Roland MT-32 Sound Module / Re: Working on a MT-32 guide / FAQ - Compiling topic list on: December 25, 2012, 03:50:54 AM
You will need to send a midi message to turn off the CM-32P channels for those games.

I have that version of KQ4 and would like to use it in the documentation.

I found your post about this in the archive from many years ago:

The sysex commands to turn off all CM-32P parts, if I read Roland's midi interpretation correctly, are:

F0 41 10 16 12 52 00 0A 10 14 F7
F0 41 10 16 12 52 00 0B 10 13 F7
F0 41 10 16 12 52 00 0C 10 12 F7
F0 41 10 16 12 52 00 0D 10 11 F7
F0 41 10 16 12 52 00 0E 10 10 F7
F0 41 10 16 12 52 00 0F 10 0F F7

Now, how can I turn those commands into a regular single midi file?

I opened an existing syx file with MIDI-OX, pasted your commands and saved it into a file named cm32poff.syx. I then used the DUMP utility from this site to send the syx file on my DOS machine and it works Cheesy

@NewRisingSUn

I found this post in the archive:
I always use the CM-500 in Mode A (both GS+LA), sending this sysex for General MIDI data and this sysex for MT-32 data. Works nice for KQ4 1.000.111 and everything else except for those few silly games from Origin Systems that use the MT-32 driver (which sends an MT-32 Reset Sysex) to play General MIDI music. For them, I just remove that Reset Sysex from the driver file itself.

I noticed this issue when playing Privateer on a MT-32 that I patched to be GM compatible. My "solution" was unplugging the MIDI cord before starting the game so it doesn't receive the reset Cheesy

Great to know that Origin using their MT-32 driver is the reason behind this weird behaviour.

Sooo that leaves me with just finding a (game) example of the clicking issue. Any ideas?

What about that small clipping I noticed between the CM-32L and CM-64 on fast playing notes? Smiley

Making good progress, but hit a small road block and need some help!

1. It's regarding games that only sound 100% correct on the MT-32 (Old) / without headphones.

I'd like to have more examples to demonstrate this. So far I have The Heart of China, there is a sound when the passport gets stamped.

There are also other sounds (cow for example) that sound quite different. But that's just one game, so I'm looking for more Smiley

Ideally at the start of the game so I don't have to play too long to get there.

EDIT: This gives me a few pointers: http://queststudios.com/smf/index.php/topic,3192.0.html

Thanks Smiley

2. CM-32L / CM-64 clicking issue rom version bug: http://queststudios.com/smf/index.php/topic,1654.msg30291.html#msg30291

Are there any games affected by this? Would love to record some footage on this issue.

3. Are there any games that, by default, will "accidentally" play sounds from the CM-32P part of a CM-64? Basically sloppy programming? I found forum entries regarding "muting" the CM-32P part and would like to know if this is necessary for some games?
17  MUSIC & SOUND CARDS / Roland MT-32 Sound Module / Re: Working on a MT-32 guide / FAQ - Compiling topic list on: December 21, 2012, 11:39:48 AM
That may be useful for someone with a power supply less than 1200mA.

Yea. And in many countries people are now very picky when it comes to power draw. Another thing I want to include are tips for what to purchase in regards to audio cables, adapters, mixers and that sort of stuff.
18  MUSIC & SOUND CARDS / Roland MT-32 Sound Module / Re: Working on a MT-32 guide / FAQ - Compiling topic list on: December 21, 2012, 12:57:27 AM
Ah thanks, that worked Smiley

I'd like my guide to include as much information as possible. It's not just aimed at users wanting to use it on a modern machine. One questions that keeps popping up is the "which one is the best?". And therefore I want to point out any differences, as unimportant they might seem. While power draw isn't a huge argument, it might matter to some that the CM-32L draws almost half of as much current as the CM-64.

But I'll keep the technical stuff in mind. The focus is on having recordings to document the differences and not the studying of electrical circuit diagrams and things like that Smiley

I added another topic:

- Setting the SC-55 into MT-32 mode

Very interesting project! BTW, do you already know the answers to all these topics, or is it intended to be a kind of wiki?

The topics listed will all be covered, and yes, I know about them. So what I'm asking is what else could I add? I'd hate to do the work and then someone here points out that this and that is missing Cheesy
20  MUSIC & SOUND CARDS / Roland MT-32 Sound Module / Re: Working on a MT-32 guide / FAQ - Compiling topic list on: December 20, 2012, 02:25:14 AM
One question I had myself, and I did this ages ago, but can't remember what program to use / steps.

How do you check the ROM version on a CM unit? I remember you had to send information to the MIDI module and it would respond with the ROM version.

- What software can I use for this (something that's free and works either on a real DOS machine or Windows with a USB MIDI adapter).
- What information do I need to send to the module
