I'm sure if anyone of you has glanced at the latest games news over the last few weeks you would have noticed the release of World of Warcraft. This new MMORPG (Massive Multi Online Role Playing Game) has gotten quite a lot of good press and has shattered almost all sales records.

I've played the US beta and even tho I don't like ANY RPG game that have been released up to this day, I got totally hooked on WoW. Having that said, I was wondering if other people have given this a try or are trying to avoid any of these MMORPG's with a ten foot pole. And of course the question arises then, why? I personally think that games like this will be the future of computer games in general. Be it in a RPG setting or another form of computer games. Couple of reasons, you HAVE to buy the game (no more illegal copying of the game), you can interact with hunderds if not thousands of people. Or not, depends how you like to play.  And games like this keep changing, new content, new missions, new places to explore.

After playing the US beta, I immediately pre-ordered the game and am now playing the 2nd beta-phase that has started in Europe. For people wanting more info, have a look at these websites:

http://en.wow-europe.com/ - European site
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/ - North America site

Maybe see you in Azeroth?!

I registered an account on Friday right before they cancelled the signup thingie. Been playing it for a few days, and I'm enjoying it more than Final Fantasy XI which is the online RPG I've been playing lately. I hate the acronym MMORPG. Massive... Multi... It's still an online game so why those extra words? To make it sound cooler?

I fear that I may be drowning in what's starting to look like an addiction cycle.

I was in the final US Stress Test Beta, and right then I was hooked. Then in December, my friends all got it when it first came out in the US, while I was diligently studying for finals. I decided to wait a week, only to find out that Blizzard didn't make any copies for a whole month! But I got my copy last week, and have been playing it since.

I'm in the same boat as DrJ, as a lot of my friends play Shadowbane, RO, Planetside, or other types of online gaming, while I'm stuck with my tried and true adventures and off-line games. I didn't think I would get so much into WoW, but... WOW!

Geez, I'm on campus for 3 hours, and already I miss it. Smiley

I was an avid EQer having played for almost 4 years when the beta for WoW was opened up.  Since then, I've been playing it as often as possible and just love the game.  What I like most is you can solo with pretty much all classes and it's very easy to quit the game when real life calls.

Blizzard has done a remarkable job at making a very funny and addicting game!

I must say that the game is quite amazing.  I know Blizzard was overwhelmed with the response and sign-up rate, and they are scrambling to expand their network to handle all the users.  As of about a week ago, I heard they had already signed up 600,000 people.  They bill between $13-15 US per month, depending on whether you want to pay one month at a time, go for 3 months, or 6 months.  Anyway, say $14 per month... times 600,000 users... that's $8,400,000 per month.  Not bad.  Also, you have to pay to buy the game in the first place.

I am pretty busy with work, bands, and trying to keep a social life going.  WoW is something that would drain too much of my time, or I'd spend so little time on it, it just would not be worth it.  Hey, if I had hours and hours I wanted to spend online, I would get it for sure.  I love Warcraft III and the expansion set, played Warcraft II like crazy, and even the original Warcraft.  (Starcraft is great too!)

So yes I would buy it, but just don't have the time, so I think I'll avoid it.

Very true, if you don't have the time you shouldn't start with it.
It amazed me how much it's more like a big adventure than really an RPG. You're able to do things on your own, or play with a group, it's all up to you. Certain quests become quite difficult after awhile so you're suggested to play in a group, but you can always keep trying it by yourself.

I think Blizzard has a definite winner here. I'll be hooked for quite a long time.

Yep that's exactly it - I know if I started to check it out, I'd get hooked for sure... and then I'd be playing it like crazy.   Smiley

It sounds amazing, as you said, with all the exploring and adventuring you can do.  I'm sure there are many different experiences to be had both on your own and with others too.  Sounds like you can build teams and go adventuring with others.  I wonder if you can build big teams and start taking over land?  But I must resist...  must.. not.. give.. in..

Well, if anyone in the US decides to play, look me up.  I'm playing by the name "CrazedOne" as Horde on Alleria.

i got the game, tore through it in a month and hit level 50. its fun for a while, but ultimately fails, due to the fact that it's extremely repetitive and has no real point in the end.
while they keep talking about 'battlegrounds' as it stands pvp is a joke. simply because it's based on each classes' imbalanced, quirky overpowered abilities 'rock paper scissors' formula, and the winner might be the guy who spent longer 'farming instances' <--- (a disgusting, mind-numbing way to play games, a lot like doing endless 'mfruns' in diablo ii) in other words its based on cheese and not skill.
the game is basically a very polished spruced up everquest clone. and that's the problem. blizzard rather than being the innovative company they used to be have jumped on the MMORPG band wagon. i will never buy an mmo again. i tried everquest once and puked on the keyboard because it was simply unplayable. i truly dont understand how one can like it or get any sense of TRUE satisfaction from endless grinding.
gaming has seriously gone downhill. that's why i play classics like the original C&C(that game has awesome music) GK1 (GK2 and GK3 are awful) and starcraft. fun, easy to play games that have a beginning and an end.
WoW is simply endless but lacks longevity. once you hit lvl 50 or 60 there's no reason to play at all, it honestly becomes SO STALE. the game became a cancer on my life so I deleted it and hid it in a far away closet. stay away from the stale, heroin-like mmo's please
actually screw computer gaming. im sick of sitting in front of the computer. funny how i do it so much but cant stand it. i will quit forever one day.

Hey Supershaft, I hear ya.  Starcraft is great, I still like to play a couple of games now and again.  I like Warcraft III as well.  For me, my gaming season tends to be in the dead of winter, then I tend to ignore the computer much more from April through to December.

Sometimes I browse the computer game section at Best Buy, or EB Games, and think this looks cool, and so does this, and so does this... then I remember, I want to have a social life.     I spend a good part of my day at work in front of a computer, so I like to spend time outside when the weather is a bit above freezing.

I've still managed to avoid World of Warcraft.  I'm avoiding it like it's the plague.   Smiley

Do so.  Once you start playing, it's almost impossible to stop.  Simply the best MMORPG currently out there.

Blizzard makes great games.  I've been all through Warcraft, Warcraft II, and Warcraft III as well as Starcraft.  I am really hoping they come out with Starcraft II, with the same sort of improvements that Warcraft III had over Warcraft II.

I know if I got into World of Warcraft, I would become a complete hermit.  Then I'd have to change my name to 'enry.

I have played every Warcraft game up until now, but I am VERY hesitant to try World of Warcraft!  Seen it and it looks so good.  All I have heard is how addictive it is, and with time being a precious factor, I don't think I want to give in to it!

I don't like MMORPGs for the mere fact that you have to keep paying every month be able to play it. I don't have money to waste on a game for anything other than buying it in a store.

I'm into WoW now, and yeah, it's addictive.  It's a good thing this game didn't come out earlier in my life; I might not have maintained self control. Smiley

Too bad you're playing on the US servers.. Otherwise we might be able to arrange an ingame meet Smiley

Anyhow, I have to admit that once you reach the higher lvls (55 and up) it gets less addictive. Finding good quests can become difficult. Still it's a great game, still play it more than any other game at the moment.

What char are you playing now Marten? And what class & why Smiley
