I just wonder how Roberta would feel about this. I know if I were her I'd be pissed about what VU is doing.

Well, we are 100% sure that Al Lowe is pissed of VU of what they done to Larry's serie

My dad once said, "You won't attract flies with vinegar."

I always responded, "Why would I want to attract flies?"

What I want to know is why did Vivendi shut down Kings Quest IX, and not the VGA remakes of the First and Second adventure?  Was KQ9 up for retail?  I assume that it would have been a free download for us... it's a real shame that Vivendi is doing this.  Don't they realize the Kings Quest series only now has a certain niche of fans?  It's been two decades since the release of the first Kings Quest, and these developers should have been allowed to procede with the game.  Perhaps if they named it something other than Kings Quest IX, like "Kings Quest: Every Coat has its Silver Lining."  That way, if Vivendi conjured up another Kings Quest in sequel, they could technically still do it.  Again, boo Vivendi - a real shame too, because some of their most popular games are based on Fan-Created material.  Sad

Realize that a company is not a person.  The left hand can truly be unaware of what the right hand is doing.  Unless the CEO and/or the company's lawyers are aware of something, then the company isn't aware of that something, regardless of how many employees know about it.  I wouldn't be surprised if employees who know about the fan projects intentionally do not share that information with their Legal department, because they know how the Legal department is likely to react (Cease-and-Desist).  By keeping quiet, they give the project a chance to escape the nest before Legal can kill it.

The unfortunate problem is that when Legal *does* get wind of a project ( mainly because that project publicizes itself too well, so the KQ9 project has itself partly to blame),  all of the work that was accomplished goes to waste.  From that perspective, it would have been better if the axe had dropped earlier.

I agree that it is a shame for this to happen when KQ9 was so close to finished.

JB: King's Quest 1/2 were done by Tierra (now AGDI) which Vivendi had their eye on, and now has negotiations with and contracts with (basically, owns them).

The KQ9 project is run by a completely different group.

I'm very sure that Quest for Glory 2 VGA is fine. What Alistair means is that AGDI has an agreement with Vivendi so that they won't get shut down. You could look through the forums at AGDI to find the specifics of the agreement in the General Forum. Just google the forum and you'll find it.

I'm pretty mad about the KQIX thing, as I'm sure most people here are. I was even a voice actor for the game, albeit probably one of the worse ones. I was looking forward to it, but I suppose I can pass the time waiting for more screenshots from Ragnar Tornquist.

By the by, if you guys look at Amazon.com for the KQ Compilation (The XP Update thingy), you'll be shocked (or not) to find that the shipping date has been pushed back to January 30th. Hmmmm...

Guess I'm not going to order that any time soon. (Mostly because I have no money right now...)

I had no idea that they planned on releasing an XP update to the compilation, are there new games included, or is it the same old stuff?

We really don't know. I THINK it's the same stuff as before, updated for XP.

Quite honestly, I can't imagine that "updated for XP" could mean anything other than running the games in a 386 emulator.

We already know that when the QfG Anthology was put together, the person placed in charge of that project wasn't able or allowed to fix any of the bugs - just slap it together and put it onto a CD, and sell the same old thing over again.

I expect more of the same.

And, wow! I actually agree with what Marten said (more or less) in that quote. First time I think I have in this thread. Smiley Thank goodness.

Hi there

For those of you that don't know, Vivendi has now given those involved in the project a fan licence to continue the project, under condition that they remove the name "King's Quest" from the title.

The game will now be called "The Silver Lining".

Vivendi said the following in a press release:

"After extensive evaluation, Vivendi Universal Games is pleased to announce that the fan developed trilogy project 'The Silver Lining' (previously known as King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining), based on characters from Sierra Entertainment's 'Kings Quest' series, has been given approval to continue development. We look forward to seeing the first of its three upcoming chapters, 'Shadows', completed soon."
