Have you heard Tom's SC-55 choirs in KQ6's "NightMare", "The Catacombs", or "Arch Druid"? That should be enough to show you that amazing things can be done with one, even though the choirs are substandard. QFG4's "Fairy" track as well (the enhanced one).

I wasn't calling the choirs bad - they're actually usefull on the SC-55.  I was just saying that the choir sounds in the FFX ogg file do not sound like a Roland's choir - that's all.

Unless the advanced Sound Canvas units have another good choir patch

There's at least 3 DOZEN choir sounds on the 8820/8850 to choose from, and I don't think it's the norm to use only one when composing a song that uses choir.  In my own case, I use several choir sounds to capture the full range of human voices; some soft and some harsher.  Choir sounds have a very limited useful range, which is why you have to switch to another variation if you go beyond the range of a given variation.  The last song I worked on that uses a choir sound (in Al Emmo) uses at least five different variation patches.

The original SC-55 is very limited with choir sounds, but up until the time I had a SC-8820, it was the best choir sound I had.  The Yamaha SW60XG has a pretty fair "Choir Ahh's" sound, too.  Choir is a difficult sound to sequence with because of its limited range.  I'm not that good with it, but it doesn't stop me from trying.  Smiley  I think "Hagatha's Theme" (Music291) in King's Quest 2 VGA uses a convincing Choir sound.

Hi Fancia, if it's not too much trouble, I wouldn't mind hering some samples from YS and Castlevania soundtrakcs.
In particular, the midi's from the ys and ys 2 eternal soundtrack, like "Over drive" and "battle ground" (the more dance/pop tunes), and some samples from the "dracula midi collection". If you don't have the mids, i can send the one's I'd be interested in.

Thanks!

If you want to get some idea of what samples they used in final fantasy seven, load up the PC version of final fantasy 7's soundfont. Smiley

They appear to not only have used a sound canvas soundmap, but many additional vintage analog synth samples. (synth strings, Prophet, etc)

Some of the more intersting samples.

016 Hammond Organ.  They usually don't call thsi sample "Hammon Organ" outright...
017 - B3. this appears to be a Hammond Organ set on percussive with a large amout of grit and character to it. This sample is what makes Still More Fighting what it is. The XG version pales by comparison, substituting a standard rotary rock organ.

081 bank 2: Moog2 (gee wonder what this is.)
80 bank 1: Prophet
79 Vank 2:Prophet Ocarina
54 bank0 Gstr: Voice
51 bank 0 Laments (nromally strings in gm?)

FInal Fantasy games use their own software wavetable midi synth on psx pr ps2, and internally the file are often MIDIS, which then get ripped out and connverted to GM/XG/etc..  The ps1 and 2 sound chips have hardware reverb/chorus in themi belieeve as well which cleans up the sound.
