I just installed and played through a bit of Police Quest III on one of my older PC's, in preparation for recording and/or extracting the MIDI in order to create an enhanced digital soundtrack.  Surprisingly, PQ3 running on this Win98SE PII computer, with both a Sound Blaster AWE32 (DAC) and MPU-IPC/MT-32 (MIDI) loaded right up with support for both -- without any fussing on my part.  That's not usually the case, so I was a bit shocked.   Shocked

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody knows of any benefits for Sound Blaster DAC support in PQ3.  I've heard a couple of digital 'beeps' for the on-screen scene clock, maybe a door slam, but I'm wondering if there's any music-related DAC benefits used in the game.  I never played the game with both MT-32 and SoundBlaster support; most Sierra titles that support the MT-32 do a good job with MIDI sound effects, so I never bothered with DAC unless there was talking...or digital music.

I suppose that the MIDI sound-effects are going to use polyphony that might otherwise have been used for the music.

You could look at it that way, but I don't think it was a conscious decision on the part of Seibert or Hammer or anyone else.

I just think they (Sierra) had the capabilities, and wanted to push Sound Blasters (or were under pressure from Creative to do so as part of their deal).

As far as I remember, the effects are things like the cool door and elevator noises, gun shots, the 'splash' as you throw the crazy guy's keys in the water, etc.
Also things like Marie's scream..  Shocked
