An SC-55mkII rates higher on the coolness scale, IMO. Wink

Not to go off on a tangent, but an interesting thing about the CM-300/500 is that they use a "GS-Hybrid" chip: the RLP-3037. According to schematics, this single chip integrates the MIDI sub-processor, PCM processor, and the RAM and ROM chips that are found separately on every other GS product (that I am aware of).

Why was the same chip not used elsewhere? Single point-of-failure? Production expense? Flawed design?

Hmmmm .... you could be on to something there.

Let me think about it for a min ... okay, you convinced me!

I just bought it:

Still, I'd really like a CM-500.  Just to have everything wrapped up into a single unit.

I haven't found anything wrong with the CM-series GS playback, mind you, and hope my rhetoric didn't influence the decision...

The CM-500's LA synthesis definitely has problems though. Smiley

In any case, it looks like you scored a pretty decent buy with the SC-55mkII, and I think you'll enjoy it!

Yeah, I was leaning towards buying it earlier today in any event.  I just need a GM/GS module to play those later DOS games, like King's Quest VI.

The Roland CM-500 really has LA Synthesis issues?  That's too bad.  Maybe I should just stick with using the CM-64 in conjuction with a CM-300 (or SC-55 in my case).

If any mod comes along, this topic can be deleted.  Since I've purchased the SC-55, I no longer need these items
