I've already gone Linux myself.

I've already gone Linux myself.

Do all your software programs run on Linux?

Funny how we all hesitated when XP first hit the shelves, but eventually, we were forced to upgrade. As XP has been revised, it's become a lot more manageable. I don't think it's out of the question to assume that Vista will achieve the same status at some point. I waited until that last possible second to upgrade to XP/SP2. It was a seamless transition. I may repeat the same scenario for Vista if improvements are made. If not, a Mac is the only other option for me. I've never been much of a Mac person myself, but I'll give one a good look if MS doesn't get it together.

The thing is people are making free programs all the time for Linux. If it doesn't exist yet it will sometime. And for everything that doesn't exist I still have a dual-boot with XP SP2. For most things programs do exist, though. Except for my music programs. And if I ever need to format I still have my system restore CD as well as a downloaded copy of the SP2 upgrade to install at the same time.

The computer geek factor is really high too Smiley.

The Linux and free software stuff seems very interesting, but although in terms of software (applications), Linux is today very well suited, this is not the case regarding hardware drivers, especially when talking about specialized hardware. Under Linux, I wouldn't be able to use my M-Audio Audiophile firewire soundcard, nor the Fantom-X editor, and that's just too bad... Sad

Probably not, but like applications, free drivers are also being developed for specific hardware to be compatible with Linux. The ones that already are are by companies who make Linux drivers along with the regular Windows ones. But then you might not want to wait, either. Hence my solution for the XP/Linux dual-boot setup.
