I don't have pictures yet, but I just got a new (well, new to me) 19" CRT monitor. I'm now running at 1600x1200 resolution. It's amazing the amount of space I have now. Recording will be a lot nicer to deal with! I also never have to scroll again in browser windows . The reason I got it was because the other CRT I was using is half-decent but it blurs the pixels which is slightly annoying and also if you ever have the misfortune of pushing the power button off you have to wait somewhere in the vicinity of 2 weeks (no exaggeration) for it to come back on again after pushing the power button on. So this one works better and is a lot bigger and is more handy. So out with the old 17"!

Congrats! I thought you had a dual monitor set-up? Does this mean one is now a different size than the other?

Yeah, well, you may remember a while ago when I posted about a CRT monitor dying on me. I replaced it with a smaller LCD so I've been using different sized dual-displays for a while now. Now they're just more different. My LCD is a 15" or something at 1024x768 only compared to the 19" 1600x1200 monster, now.

Enjoy your 19" CRT! Picture quality wise they are still the best.
I myself am pretty chuffed with my 22" widescreen LCD, but I do watch a lot of movies on it. Widescreen is awful for low-res stuff like DOS games.

I found a local guy who sold me a 21" CRT for $20. It's a little brighter than I think it should be... it doesn't seem to do "black" as everything's more "grey"ish..... I'll tinker with that. But what a niiiice screen. $20 WELL spent! ...best of all, it's a short-neck, so its CRT tube is no deeper than some 17" CRT's! Some 19-21" CRT's are so deep they'll swallow up a ton of desk space.... It's got the old 5-plug colour input that's starting to make a comeback, as well as a USB plug which I don't even know what it does, since there's no hub.

I picked up a nice 21" CRT a few years ago for $5, at the hospital where I work -- old equipment. Over the years, I've acquired a few PC's and monitors from the hospital. All the terminals at work went to LCD's a few years ago. I recently replaced that CRT with a 22" widescreen LCD which I love. I, too, watch a lot of video on my PC, so the widescreen is much nicer than a CRT. Though, I wish they made small plasma monitors. LCD's really seem to pale in comparison to plasma.

Depends on the size, with screens sized sub 40" LCD is better because the pixels are smaller. If one were to make a 22" plasma it would have a pretty low resolution, maybe 640x480 or smaller even... Plasma has better color reproduction and black level, but LCD has better resolution because they can make a LCD pixel smaller than a plasma pixel. As a rule of thumb, if you take a LCD and Plasma screen of similar size the LCD will have better resolution.

They did make plasma screens 15-20 years ago! Hope you like 4 shades of orange..... There was a really nifty portable 386 that had 2 ISA slots (one was really, really small) and a flip-up VGA orange plasma screen. Had it for a week but I couldn't get my sound card to work with it, plus I missed the colour. (I traded my 486 system to get it! Bad deal... glad he let me back out!) I must say, though.... it was one of few portable computers that had a REALLY visible screen in pitch darkness! I wish I had it right now! Needless to say it had a pretty hefty power drain, so there was no battery - just a plug.

I actually have an old 386 Toshiba laptop (monster!) with 2 ISA slots where I put sound cards and others things from time to time and an orange VGA-compatible plasma screen. A lot more then 4 shades . Fun times.
