How accurate is the Game Blaster emulation in DosBox? I've been trying to get a Sound Blaster 1.5 for easy CMS upgrade, but perhaps it isn't worth the effort...

I would say extremely accurate, just like the OPL emulation.

No shipping to Europe, and I don't want to pay 75 USD for it either. I have a Sound Blaster 2.0, but will likely not find the upgrade chips for it.

SB 1.5s are real easy to find. Shipping to Europe might be problematic but if you get the card at a low enough price then it maybe worth it. I have a 1.5 w/ CMS chips and a 2.0 w/o the chips. Meowurf has the CMS chips but he isn't willingto sell them even though he doesn't have 2.0. Oh well, either one will show up or dos box will be the way to go!

I find the OPL emulation in dosbox a little off... it is emulation after all... it doesn't sound exactly like a real YMF262 Smiley But regardless, it is pretty good though.

And yeah, I realize that DOSbox has the CMS emulation, but what if we want to run this on a machine? Wink

Got any recordings to show the difference? Make sure you increase the sample rate settings of mixer and OPL.

I played around with a few Soundcards and for example with clone chips from ESS and Creative, you can clearly hear a difference. But DOSBox IMO is pretty much perfect.

As discussed, SB 1.5 + CMS chips is your best option.

Not sure what you consider expensive my friend, but I picked up two a few weeks back w/ shipping (in the US) for $13.45.

I got mine from eBay. They aren't listed under CMS but under Philips with the part number.

It's not in my ebay system any more (too long ago)...

Google for that chip and see if you find another seller?

In case you're still searching: http://cgi.ebay.com/SAA1099P-PHILIPS-18-Pin-DIP-SAA1099-NOS-/370354307759?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item563ad642af

Otherwise I can get them for about the same price from russia (those chips were also used in the SAM Coupe homecomputer which is related to the ZX Spectrum which is incredibly popular there) Wink

Here's a bit of fantastic news. "Chuck(G)," who frequents the Vintage Computer Forums, has successfully cloned the SB2.0 C/MS-upgrade PAL chip:

Never say never Smiley

So what devices / tools does one need to produce these chips?

I saw that too Cloudschatze. I am super excited. Did you provide him your chip for the reverse engineering? I just want to make sure he had a good source/original ;0.

So is the BIN file he provides the flash code for the chip? If so, it is much smaller then I expected. However, it was apparently complex enough to thwart people so far. Chuck(G) is on a whole different level of course. The man is amazing. I think a simple how-to is needed (you know part # for the GAL, what kind of burner to use, etc) for those of us less electronically inclined. Wink

Chuck talked about a few "tweaks" that are needed to make  a GAL worked so I am not sure we are quite at the point where you can just flash the code and be done. But maybe I am wrong!

Indeed. Smiley

My understanding is that the BIN file is the "brute-force" pin readout. To program a new chip you'd need to take the EQN information, provided on Part 11 of the blog post, and run that through EQN2JED to produce a JEDEC file.

If somebody made me a chip, I would be interested. I still have my SB 2.0 around.

Charles MacDonald has made a PAL reader that can read protected PAL's (not registered) in case any other PAL's need to be read Smiley
