Anyone ever heard one of these exotic things? My guess it's a regular waveblaster in an external box. Would like to have one (for collection purposes) but they seem very hard to find, even on Google you don't find anything about it. I've read a review about it though in a dutch magazine (1994) about it and from what I've read it sounded A LOT less than a real Sound Canvas and also (like the waveblaster) didn't have reverb and chorus effects.

I saw one on eBay a couple of months ago, was tempted to grab it but wasn't sure since I couldn't find any information on it.

Somebody at Creative actually thought the output of the WaveBlaster was good enough that someone would want to buy it as an external module?? Oh, the vanity!

I got the midiblaster in the mail yesterday. Except for the box that has signs of time the rest is in ultra-mint condition, I really wonder if it has ever been used. Everything that has to be in de box is there, even the audio cable. I know my roland and other stuff sound better but to be honest I am not even THAT dissapointed in the sound quality of this thing. Sometimes it sounds really worse though but sometimes, even without the reverb and chorus which this thing doesn't have, it sounds surprisingly good. Anyway, I'm happy with it! ps: I couldn't resist unscrewing it to reveal the inside.

This is from the readme:
The following files will be installed to your hard disk after running INSTALL.EXE.
In the \MIDIBLST directory.
README .COM - Program to display the README.TXT file README .TXT - This file DEMO .BAT - Batch file to run MIDI Blaster demo program MBDEMO .EXE - MIDI Blaster demo program PLAYMIDI.EXE - MIDI file player SBMIDI .EXE - MIDI driver SETMIDI .EXE - Program to set up MIDI mapping SETGM .MID - MIDI code for setting General MIDI mode SETMT32 .MID - MIDI code for setting MT32 mode *.MID - Sample MIDI files
So basically it's not very exciting.

Well, since "high quality" was a gross exaggeration, I wonder how affordable this thing was. I suggest $179.99 when first released, which is too much. Is 20-note polyphony even within the General Midi standard?

The funny thing about 20-voice polyphony is that the box states 20-notes, but the manual states 24-voices. I don't know if there is a difference in a VOICE and a NOTE but I think they mean the same in this case. So whether the manual is right or the box I wouldn't know. But you are right that there is nothing high-quality about it, although some tracks don't actually sound TOO bad.
I still have a PCM (Personal Computer magazine) from 1994 or 1995 i believe where it was reviewed and it was not very positive. It is in dutch but for those who are interested I can make a scan of the review.
