With this post I’d like to “resurrect” the old discussion about the comparison, in terms of sound quality, between the Roland CM-32P (or the PCM part of the CM-64) and the SC-55.

I’ve always thought that at least some of the CM-32P patches were better than its SC-55 counterparts, especially those found in the SN-U110 expansion cards. After a quite long process, I’ve finally managed to get the full collection of SN-U110 cards (15 in total), so I’ve been able to do a proper comparison. Here there are all the cards in all their glory Wink :

As you probably know, the CM-32P is a cut-down version of the U-110, one of the very first fully PCM based synths from Roland. The synthesis engine of the U-series is very simple and “primitive” (we’re talking about PCM technology of the 80s), so they are more like sample players instead of “real” synthesizers. Virtually the only parameters than can be edited are the frequency of the oscillators (pitch) and the amplitude and the envelope generator of the amplifier. There’s no filter at all. Nonetheless, the specs were quite good at the time: 31-voice polyphony (up to two elements per patch), 6-part multitimbral and effects processor. The synthesis engine of the Sound Canvas is a bit better (filters), and it has a lot more patches, but there are on the other hand some drawbacks, such as less polyphony and the inability to select the oscillator waveform for creating patches (although you cannot do it either in the CM-32P or the CM-64; only in the U-series).

The point is that I think that the CM-32P can sound better than the SC-55 because at least some of the PCM samples are of a higher quality. That’s especially true in the case of the expansion cards. Some of the sounds found on these cards rival the quality of many more modern synthesizers. This makes the CM-32P an interesting tool for music creation. But in order to let everyone to listen and judge by himself, I’ve made some recordings. Here you’ll find some phrases using equivalent or comparable patches, both performed by a CM-32P (actually, a CM-64), and a SC-55 (actually, a SC-88 using the SC-55 soundmap, as I currently don’t have any SC-55 or 100% compatible. Maybe there could be some slight differences in sound between the SC-55 soundmap of the SC-88 and the real SC-55, but I suspect that, even if they exist, that would mean that the SC-88 sounds better, due to its higher quality 18-bit DACs and audio signal output).

I’ve selected virtually all the patches which are “equivalent” among the CM-32P (either internal presets or expansion cards) and the SC-55. There are many GM patches which have no counterpart in the CM-32P even with the cards, but to be fair there are also many other patches in the SN-U110 cards with no equivalent in the SC-55 soundmap. All the phrases are performed by me, so don’t expect great playing skills. They were all recorded using my M-Audio Audiophile Delta 192, and MP3 encoded at 320 kbps. Reverb settings were the default ones. For even further comparison, I’ve also recorded the same phrases using a basic XG module (the MU-50).

Also, I tried to test how a CM-32P, fully equipped with expansion cards, would perform in an entire track. So I picked up some of my favourite tunes from the LSL3 soundtrack and I “converted” them to the CM-32P. As the module can only use one expansion card at once, I converted the midi tracks into audio tracks when needed, so I could use every time the patch I wanted to. Here there are the tracks:

LSL3 – Island Song: http://ismael.cat/david/(CM64)LSL3_Island.mp3
LSL3 – Fat City: http://ismael.cat/david/(CM64)LSL3_FatCity.mp3
LSL3 – The Incredible Dork: http://ismael.cat/david/(CM64)LSL3_IncredibleDork.mp3
LSL3 – Dale Carsonian (this one uses the vibraphone patch from the CM-32L, as there is no vibes patch in the CM-32P, even with the expansion cards): http://ismael.cat/david/(CM64)LSL3_Carsonian.mp3

Well, I think it’s enough for now! Tongue

Listening to how these samples all sound like the SC-55, only better, I am musing how great the SC-55 could have been.

By the time the SC-55 was released, Roland already had a good bunch of great samples. I guess that, given the memory prices, the SC-55 was a trade-off between quality and quantity, considering also that it was not the top-end of Roland synths. Anyway, it was a very good product, IMHO.

Yo, awesome work!
By any chance have you recorded all your riffs in a midi file?
If so I would like to have those so I can make my own comparison stuff.

Unfortunately I didn't use midi files, but Cubase projects, and in a VERY rough way (without instrument settings, tempos, and so on), because they were "quick test" recordings and all the settings were made using the master keyboard and/or module controls.

Yes, definitely an awesome effort, Shad0wfax. It's interesting for me to compare your CM-32P only LSL3 recordings to the ones I've been working on for my CM-64 LSL3 complete soundtrack project.

I've been using the SN-U110-07 card, the only one I actually have, for this project. I think it's really doing wonders for some of the tracks, as guitars are one of the weak spots of the CM-32L (and, as a matter of fact, the CM-32P as well).

What did you use for percussion, btw? The CM-32P doesn't have a percussion track or any native samples.

I'm glad you liked my work. I think that the CM-32P can be a very interesting tool for composing music (although quite limited in terms of sound editing and effects), as long as you can use some SN-U110 cards. It also helps having the L/A part also (CM-64).

All the percussions are based on the SN-U110-02 and SN-U110-10 cards, because, as you rightly point out, the CM-32P has no percussion sounds at all.

There should be a way to add all the SN-U110 cards and remap it to the patch bank of a SC-55, now that would be awesome.

That would be great, but it's not possible as there's one single expansion slot in the CM-32P and 15 different cards...  Sad

Maybe daisy-chaining 15 different modules  Grin

Yeah I know. The U110 can hold 8 cards? So maybe the CM32 can be modified to do so as well.
It's too complicated tho.

Well, that could work in theory.
