I believe you can turn off the sound effects by pressing shift+S. The Roland music will still play.

Oh nice! I just tried it but it wouldn't work. Then I tried it in Space Combat and success! That's awesome and will make it much easier to get some of the space combat music!

I've had the WC1 and WC2 MIDI files for years... that might be more useful than playing the game to get a recording.
That said, I love the original WC1 theme!
What does OST stand for?

If someone has the original Wing Commander 1-2 midi files in the original MT-32 version, not a GM conversion, I would be interested!

Fireworks and Introduction
First of all, good quality recording, man. I do, however, have a question, which I hope you won't find overly critical: Is there any particular reason you decided to loop the theme over and over and not even let it end properly even once? I assume you recorded the intro with DosBox. If so, you should probably slow it down a little bit more and let the theme end properly. I think it would make a better video, but that's just my personal opinion.

I only have GM now, but there was a utility that stripped them out of the game. At least you won't need the sysex stuff, since it was 99% sound effects and the instruments stayed to the same map as factory.

Main reason was to use the extra time give by YouTube.... But that's a good suggestion regarding letting the song finish. I have an idea as to what to do now and some other ideas popped up last night :-)
There are a lot of custom patches for Wing Commander. Most of them are for Sound Effects though...
I lack the midi skills however to do much here :-( The DOSBox midi captures do work fine though. But you need to let the whole file play (which includes starting the game, loading savegame and "getting" to wherever you need to go...

What does OST stand for? Original Sound Track. Wing Commander had an amazing soundtrack. I don't even remember playing it, I just remember the music as a kid. I'd love to have some nicely recorded OGG's or FLAC's from edited MT-32 MIDI files to listen to. What a fantastic soundtrack. So epic and original.

I have and MT-32 MIDI file of the Intro I recorded years ago, as well as a properly converted GM version of the Bar theme (aka "Swing Commander). I can send you them if you like. I could try and capture a few MIDI files from DosBox for you, if you like. Edit: I just remembered I had recorded several themes in original MT-32 format. It's not all of them, not by a long shot, but still...

It's really easy! In DOSBox at the DOS prompt just before launching the game press ALT+CTRL+F8 and then launch the game. It captures all the MIDI date including all the Sysex info at the beginning + "Origin Sound Systems" message... You can play these files with Windows Media Player just fine... However I found you need to let the whole recording play (from start to finish). If you skip parts you can end up with wrong sounding instruments... Someone with enough MIDI skills can likely edit this files and remove the unwanted stuff... EDIT: Final 2 Videos are up!That little part after you eject is just soooo nice. Shame it's so short to be honest. Also you need to slow down the machine a lot, otherwise it won't play at all :-) When you stuff up a mission you hear a different music before landing and during debriefing. The music during the award ceremony is also quite good.

Actually, I know how to record midi in DosBox. I was looking for the complete soundtrack in MT-32 format.

Yea sorry what I was trying to say is, why don't we create this files ourselves? We could split the workload. But we need someone who knows their way around MT-32 Midi files? Specifically removing parts of the file which shouldn't play, without breaking it so that you hear incorrect instruments... EDIT: I'm working my way through Toms instructions found here: http://www.queststudios.com/FAQ/recordfaq.htmlIt's quite complex and I'm taking baby steps. Tom uses a DOS MIDI application so I will also try to get the hang of it!

I've been able to remove unwanted notes using Cakewalk Pro v3.01, downloadable from Tom's page. It's for 16-bit Windows though, it will not run under a 64-bit OS. XP 32-bit is fine. You may get an error message, but it still works.

Cool! I couldn't get it run under XP Mode. I did get an error message but it was right after running setup... I had some success with a trial version of Sonar 8 and although I got somewhere it was really tedious..

You need a genuine 32-bit XP (32-bit Vista or Win7 may also work), since the 64-bit versions of Windows lack a 16-bit mode. Just running the software in XP mode isn't enough.
