The MT-32? The difference is only 32 sound effects.

I wonder if later model MT-32s (the ones with the headphone socket) have those...

As far as I know, only the Roland MT-32 and MT-100 comes close as far as the LCD is concerned. As for the sound banks, I think the CM-32L is "slightly" superior because of the added sound effects.

I think MT-200 has CM-32L sounds and LCD. Can anyone confirm?

I have an MT-200. I don't know what CM-32L sounds are, but it has the Roland GS instrument mapping and also has the MT-32 instrument mapping. I don't know if that's what you mean or if you're talking about the sounds themselves.

And it's LCD.

MT-32 has got:
128 sound patches, 30 drums and percussion sounds

CM-32L and LAPC-1 have got:
128 sound patches, 30 drums and percussion sounds, 33 sound effects

MT-100 is only MT-32 compatible

CM-64, CM-500 are also CM-32L compatible

So I wonder whether MT-200 is only MT-32 compatible or it is also CM-32L compatible (whether it has these extra 33 sound effects)

according to this link the MT-200 is a GM instrument, and therefore, I don't think it's MT-32 or CM-32L compliant at all.

The MT-32 mode is, as I understand it, just the 128 preset sounds of the MT-32. I don't think it can handle MT-32 sysex. The CM-32 mode is CM-32P mode.

The fact that the MT-200 has a CM-32 "MODE" doesn't necessarily mean that is MT-32 or CM-32L compatible. It seems that the MT-200 is a PCM module, and the MT-32/CM-32, etc. are LA synthesizers. PCM modules can have MT-32 sound maps, but as long as they don't have LA architecture they cannot emulate all the possibilities, such as custom-programmed sounds. Virtually all games that use the MT-32 have their own programmed sounds, so I bet they won't sound the same in a MT-200.

Even my Roland SCB-55 daughterboard has the instrument banks of the MT-32, but it is not compatible with MT-32 games. For instance, when I play an older soccer game on my SCB-55 in MT-32 mode, the effect of kicking the ball is played out by a drum sound...how cheesy. But when a real MT-32 or 100% compatible plays the effect, you will hear a real kick sound effect. The difference in sound quality is really miles apart.

The CM-32L, LAPC-1, and CM-64 (MT-32 portion) all had the same instruments but added some sound effects to the percussion channel (10) but also had cleaner outputs and also added chorus and six specifict types of reverb, rather than one "general" reverb mode.  Great improvement!

Plate reverb sounds totally cool!  Tongue

And the MT-200 mentioned earlier may be able to emulate MT-32 and CM-64, but it cannot do what all MT-32 true compatibles can do- accept new instrument information to create new sounds and effects.

I thought that MT-200 may be the CM-500 with LCD and buttons. Cause CM-500 is GS Sound Source, GM General Midi, CM-64, CM-32, MT-32 compatible. As CM-xx moduls were the ones without buttons I thought that there should be the one with them.

The MT-200 is a sound sequencer with GS compatibility.  It does not boast the true LA capabilities that the CM-500 does.
