I agree about both of those things, but- Some games sound better with one, some the other, some it doesn't matter. Just be careful, because certain games that use a lot of custom SysEx instruments, ala Willy Beamish, sound WAY different (a.k.a. wrong) on the CM-32L.

Now I'm really only talking Sierra games, obviously many other companies used the MT-32/etc Wink

What you say is quite true. Especially games from Sierra and Dynamix have a few sounds that only sound right on the MT-32 (Old). Lucasarts on the other hand seem to have used a LAPC-I / CM-32L. Especially Sound Effects can have quite noticeable differences like the spitting sounds in Monkey Island 2 or the stamp sound in Heart of China.

Wing Commander is another game. Here the firework (the final loud BANG) will clip on non MT-32(old) units because of the change to the volume control.

The CM-32L however is very quiet, I think it's the quietest card of all of them.

Isn't Monkey Island 2 a second gen. MT-32 composition?

The CM-32L will not clip if you execute sysex to set the digital volume to a moderate level before loading up Wing Commander.

Some more from the CM-32L:

TFX / Tactical Fighter eXperiment - Part One | Part Two (I consider this the best MIDI soundtrack of all time.)
European Champions

And not related to the MT-32, Inferno recorded from the new SC-55 I scored on eBay. Unfortunately, it stinks of cigarettes. Sad

Rhizome,

Thanks for posting this score. I have heard of the game, but never played it, didn't realise it was a CM game. Thanks for the recommendation too, I'm not sure which soundtrack I consider the best MIDI score. Smiley

I loved the T.F.X. soundtrack on my SCC1, but I assume that's a conversion, huh?

Barry originally composed it on an LAPC-I then converted it to the SCC-1 and Sound Blaster (which he hated). The SCC-1 version ended up becoming the CD version, although 'Close Air Support' somehow got broken on the CD version.

I'm still working on recording that version from my SC-55.

(Here's the version recorded on my Audigy 2 ZS if you want to hear it - this is recorded from a CM-300: http://la32.co.uk/dreams/pc/TFX_Original_SCC-1.7z )

Thanks, it brings back memories!

The CM-300 should offer the same quality as the original SC-55, shouldn't it?

I actually notice the SC-55 sounds a little crisper.

At the moment I'm playing with the CM-32L in overflow mode to a CM-64, since several of Barry's tracks eat a lot of poly.
